The widow with two coins

A widow observed by Jesus in the temple.

The widow with two coins: holding two small plain coins near a temple courtyard

Who was The widow with two coins?

Jesus watched an unnamed poor widow put two small coins into the temple treasury. He pointed out the cost of her gift. The scene comes just after a warning about people who exploit widows.

The passage asks us to notice a person whose small gift might be overlooked. It also needs to be read with the nearby warning about injustice, rather than used to demand that poor people give everything.

Why is the size of a gift not the whole story?
