Getting ready
Age & adult help
Following several illustrated panels and reading speech or story text adds a literacy demand to the colouring.
Read panels aloud and help children follow their order. Check the story and wording before using it with younger children.
What you’ll need
Printer, paper, colouring pencils or crayons. An adult reader may be helpful for younger children.
Time & preparation
One comic page, including colouring. Shared reading and discussion are additional.
Age is an editorial estimate for the motor and reading demands of this format. Difficulty, completion time and suggested tools are planning estimates, not build-tested. An adult should adapt discussion of death, danger or distress to the group.
Check the file before you print for a group, and allow for any extra help the kids might need.
Printing tipsThe story behind the craft
Bible passage: 2 Kings 25
Babylon’s siege brings famine and the fall of Jerusalem. The temple is destroyed and many people are taken into exile, leaving the community facing deep loss and displacement.
Main takeaway: The fall of Jerusalem is a story of loss that should be met with compassion.
While you colour the panels
Read the panels in order, pausing at a change in a character’s action or understanding.
An adult should select details of the siege. Attend to people losing homes and community, not to the destruction as an entertaining battle scene.
Younger learners can describe an action in one panel. Older learners can compare a caption with its Bible passage and discuss what a short comic leaves out.
Questions to explore
- What did the siege do to the city?
- What might displaced families need?
- How can we show care for people who have had to leave home?
