Ezra Reads God's Law to the People
Nehemiah 8:1–18
In Jerusalem, the people gathered to hear God's law read clearly, and their understanding led them from tears to joy and obedience.
Before you teach
The people gather at the Water Gate and ask Ezra to bring Moses’ law. He reads before men, women and all who can understand; the Levites explain the meaning. The people weep, but Nehemiah, Ezra and the Levites say the day is holy and call them to rejoice and share food. They celebrate because they understand. On the next day leaders study further and find the instruction for the seventh-month feast of booths. The people make shelters and live in them with great gladness. The law is read each day, with seven days of feast and an eighth-day assembly.
Describe the central teaching of Ezra Reads God's Law to the People, using two details from the reading. In Jerusalem, the people gathered to hear God's law read clearly, and their understanding led them from tears to joy and obedience.

Welcome: Ezra Reads God's Law to the People
4 minIntroduce “Ezra Reads God's Law to the People” and locate Nehemiah 8:1–18. In Jerusalem, the people gathered to hear God's law read clearly, and their understanding led them from tears to joy and obedience. Invite each learner to name a detail or question they will listen for.
Nehemiah 8:1, Nehemiah 8:10, Nehemiah 8:18
Read and explain the passage
8 minRead Nehemiah 8:1–18. At the Water Gate the people ask Ezra to bring Moses’ law, which Yahweh commanded for Israel. On the first day of the seventh month he reads from early morning to midday before men, women and all who can understand. He stands on the wooden platform; the people stand when he opens the book, say Amen as he blesses Yahweh, and bow in worship. The Levites help them understand: the law is read distinctly and its sense is given.
The people weep on hearing it. Nehemiah, Ezra and the teaching Levites say the day is holy and tell them not to grieve, but to eat, drink and send portions to those without prepared food: Yahweh’s joy is their strength. They celebrate because they understand the words.
On the second day the family heads, priests and Levites gather to study further. They find the command for Israel to live in booths during the seventh-month feast and proclaim the gathering of branches. The people build temporary shelters on roofs and in courts and public places and live in them. The narrator says they have not done so since Joshua’s days, and there is great gladness. The law is read daily; they keep the feast seven days and the solemn assembly on the eighth. Discuss careful reading, explanation, sharing and response while keeping this festival command in its stated Israelite setting.

Discuss the details and their meaning
6 minUse the questions below to examine the opening reading and worship, the Levites’ explanation, the change from tears to shared joy and the further study that leads to building booths. Separate the historical festival instruction from applications about listening, asking for explanation and responding thoughtfully today.

3 minRevisit Nehemiah 8:1–18. Invite a learner to summarise what the group has learned about Ezra Reads God's Law to the People and another to support the summary with a verse. Give learners a moment to complete their response sheet. They can share a question or, if appropriate for the group, join the optional prayer.
Nehemiah 8:1, Nehemiah 8:10, Nehemiah 8:18
Questions to explore
What did Ezra and the people do when he opened the book, and how did the Levites help them understand?
Ezra opens the book from the wooden platform, the people stand, and he blesses Yahweh. They answer Amen, lift their hands and bow in worship. The Levites help the people understand; the law is read distinctly and its sense is explained.
Nehemiah 8:4, Nehemiah 8:5, Nehemiah 8:6, Nehemiah 8:7, Nehemiah 8:8
How does this moment affect the rest of the account: “So the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions to others, and to celebrate with great joy, because they had understood what had been told to them.”?
The people rejoice and share food because they understand the words and have been told the day is holy. On the next day leaders gather for further study, find the instruction about booths and proclaim it. The people gather branches, make temporary shelters and keep the feast. Understanding is followed by further study and action.
Nehemiah 8:9, Nehemiah 8:10, Nehemiah 8:11, Nehemiah 8:12, Nehemiah 8:13, Nehemiah 8:14, Nehemiah 8:15, Nehemiah 8:16, Nehemiah 8:17, Nehemiah 8:18
What helps you move from only hearing God's word to truly understanding and obeying it?
Notice how the account joins attentive hearing, a clear reading, the Levites’ explanation and further study. The people then share food and act on the festival instruction, with daily reading through the feast and an eighth-day assembly. Learners might ask for explanations, reread and discuss an appropriate response with an adult; that is an application, not a requirement to copy every historical festival rule.

Nehemiah 8
1 All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the wide place that was in front of the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Yahweh had commanded to Israel.
2 Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.
3 He read from it before the wide place that was in front of the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those who could understand. The ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.
4 Ezra the scribe stood on a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.
5 Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people (for he was above all the people), and when he opened it, all the people stood up.
6 Then Ezra blessed Yahweh, the great God. All the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” with the lifting up of their hands. They bowed their heads, and worshiped Yahweh with their faces to the ground.
7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law; and the people stayed in their place.
8 They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.
9 Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “Today is holy to Yahweh your God. Don’t mourn, nor weep.” For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law.
10 Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.”
11 So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Hold your peace, for the day is holy. Don’t be grieved.”
12 All the people went their way to eat, to drink, to send portions, and to celebrate, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.
13 On the second day, the heads of fathers’ households of all the people, the priests, and the Levites were gathered together to Ezra the scribe, to study the words of the law.
14 They found written in the law how Yahweh had commanded by Moses that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month;
15 and that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the mountain, and get olive branches, branches of wild olive, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make temporary shelters, as it is written.”
16 So the people went out and brought them, and made themselves temporary shelters, everyone on the roof of his house, in their courts, in the courts of God’s house, in the wide place of the water gate, and in the wide place of Ephraim’s gate.
17 All the assembly of those who had come back out of the captivity made temporary shelters and lived in the temporary shelters, for since the days of Joshua the son of Nun to that day the children of Israel had not done so. There was very great gladness.
18 Also day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. They kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.
