Bible verses for children

The Word before the beginning.

John 1:1

A vast star-filled sky above ancient mountains, a golden dawn beginning along the distant horizon and a quiet river winding through the landscape
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

John calls Jesus the Word, presenting him as with God and as God. This is more than a spoken sentence. The opening introduces who Jesus is before telling his earthly story.

Read the opening with an adult and ask how a title can reveal someone’s identity.

Talk about it

What does John want us to understand before the story begins?

Bible context & readings +

John 1:1–18 introduces the Word, creation, life and light, then says the Word became flesh. Read the opening together rather than treating Word as an ordinary book or isolated message.
