Bible verses for children

Care for the animals who depend on you.

Proverbs 12:10

A righteous man respects the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

Proverbs 12:10 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

A righteous person notices an animal’s needs and treats its life with care. Even something called kindness can be cruel if it ignores what the animal actually needs. Gentle care includes suitable food, water, rest and safe space.

Ask an adult how to care properly for a pet. Let it rest when it needs space, rather than forcing it to play because you want to.

Talk about it

How can you tell what an animal needs instead of guessing?

Bible context & readings +

Proverbs 12:10 makes treatment of animals part of righteous conduct. Its second half sharply contrasts real care with the supposed kindness of cruel people. The lesson is attentive responsibility, not simply feeling fond of animals.
