Bible verses for children

Try a gentle answer.

Proverbs 15:1

Two children listen calmly to one another after a disagreement
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Proverbs 15:1 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

A gentle reply can calm a disagreement, while harsh words can make it hotter. Gentle does not mean dishonest or weak: we can state a clear boundary respectfully. Another person still has responsibility for their own anger and behaviour.

If someone snaps about a shared toy, you could say, “Let’s ask for help taking turns.” Move away and get an adult if the situation is unsafe.

Talk about it

Bible context & readings +

This proverb compares the usual effects of gentle and harsh speech. It gives a wise approach to conflict, not a guarantee that every angry person will calm down. A person being mistreated is not to blame for failing to find perfect words.
