Bible verses for children

Do not feed a quarrel with gossip.

Proverbs 26:20

A small supervised campfire in a safe stone fire ring with a neat stack of unused wood well away, an adult gently gestures to children not to add more fuel
For lack of wood a fire goes out. Without gossip, a quarrel dies down.

Proverbs 26:20 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

A fire goes out when no more wood is added. Gossip can act like fuel, keeping a conflict alive by spreading hurtful stories. Refusing to repeat it can help a quarrel settle, while truthful reporting to someone who can help is different.

If classmates repeat a rumour, do not add another version. Ask an adult for help if the story points to real harm.

Talk about it

What could you say instead of adding to a rumour?

Bible context & readings +

Proverbs 26:20–22 groups images of fuel, quarrelling and gossip. The lesson concerns speech that sustains conflict. It is not a reason to silence someone describing a problem; responsible help-seeking aims to address harm rather than spread it.
