Bible verses for children

Help me understand what I read.

Psalm 119:18

A caring adult and two children attentively reading an open Bible together at a simple wooden table, one child following a line with a finger, thoughtful faces and a clay lamp nearby
Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things out of your law.

Psalm 119:18 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

Opening the eyes is a picture of gaining understanding. The singer asks to notice wonderful things in God’s instruction. Reading words and understanding them are different steps, and asking questions is a good part of learning.

Read a short passage with someone who can help. Ask what an unfamiliar word means, who is speaking and what happened just before it. You do not have to understand everything at once.

Talk about it

What question would help you understand a passage better?

Bible context & readings +

Psalm 119 repeatedly asks for help in learning and living by God’s teaching. Verse 18 is one of those requests. Its picture of opened eyes concerns understanding; it does not imply that a person with limited sight cannot learn or know God.
