Bible verses for children

The Lord is my shepherd.

Psalm 23:1

A kind ancient shepherd in simple cream and brown robes gathers sheep in a green meadow, carrying a small lamb gently while the flock follows his voice
Yahweh is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing.

Psalm 23:1 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

A shepherd guides a flock towards food, water and places to rest. David uses that work as a picture of God’s care. “I shall lack nothing” expresses trust in the shepherd’s provision. It does not mean that we will receive every toy, treat or possession we want.

Think about the difference between something you need and something you wish for. You can thank God for care you receive and tell a trusted adult when a real need is not being met.

Talk about it

What does a good shepherd do to care for the flock?

Bible context & readings +

Psalm 23 is attributed to David and begins with a shepherd picture. Rest, guidance and a dark valley all appear in the poem. Reading the whole psalm shows that care and trust are described alongside difficulty, not only in easy times.
