Bible verses for children

Not alone in the dark valley.

Psalm 23:4

An ancient shepherd walks beside a small flock through a shaded valley toward warm light beyond, holding a staff and staying close to the smallest lamb
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

The dark valley pictures a frightening part of life. The shepherd’s rod and staff are tools for guarding and guiding the flock. The singer takes comfort in the shepherd’s presence through the valley. The verse does not say the valley disappears or that being frightened is wrong.

If you are facing illness, loss or another hard experience, tell someone you trust. You can pray for courage while accepting the company and practical care of people who help you.

Talk about it

Who can walk alongside you when something feels frightening?

Bible context & readings +

Psalm 23 moves from green pastures to a valley of deep darkness. The speaker now addresses God directly: “you are with me.” The poem offers companionship and trust amid danger, rather than a promise that grief and suffering will never happen.
