Bible verses for children

From sinking mud to firm ground.

Psalm 40:2

A companion on a firm rock helps a man out of muddy ground
He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.

Psalm 40:2 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

A muddy pit pictures helplessness: the more someone struggles, the harder it can feel to stand. A rock pictures steady footing. The singer thanks God for rescue using these strong images. The poem does not require us to know whether there was a real pit in this person’s story.

When a problem feels too tangled to solve, a calm adult can help you find the first step. Receiving support can feel like finding solid ground again.

Bible context & readings +

Psalm 40 opens with thanksgiving for being heard and rescued, but later asks for help again. The muddy pit and firm rock express that rescue vividly. The whole prayer shows that being helped once does not mean all future difficulties disappear.
