Bible verses for children

Longing like a thirsty deer.

Psalm 42:1

A gentle deer lowering its head to drink from a clear stream in a quiet green woodland, ripples in water, longing and refreshment
As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, God.

Psalm 42:1 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

A thirsty deer urgently needs water. The singer uses that picture to describe longing for God. “My soul” means the person’s deep inner life. This is not just a cheerful nature picture: it expresses how painful it can feel to miss worship, comfort and a sense of closeness.

If you miss a place or people who helped you feel connected to God, tell someone about it. A familiar song or a prayer together may help you express that longing.

Bible context & readings +

Psalm 42 includes tears, memories of worship and questions about feeling forgotten. The deer’s thirst introduces that longing. Read the sad parts as well as the hopeful refrain; the prayer makes room for feelings that are not quickly resolved.
