Bible verses for children

A refuge in trouble.

Psalm 46:1

A family takes shelter in a sturdy welcoming stone home with a tower while gentle rain falls outside; warm lamplight and caring companionship inside
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

A refuge is a place of shelter when danger or trouble comes. The psalm calls God both refuge and strength: someone to turn towards, and a source of help to keep going. It does not tell us to face danger without protection or pretend we need nobody else.

If you feel unsafe, go to a trusted adult or a safer place. Prayer can go alongside the practical help people offer; asking for help is not the opposite of trusting God.

Bible context & readings +

Psalm 46 imagines upheaval in the earth and conflict among nations. The community expresses trust in God amid that turmoil. Its images of shelter and strength are spoken in the presence of trouble, not as a promise that trouble never comes.
