Named person · New Testament

Meet Simon of Cyrene.

A person made to carry Jesus' cross.

Simon of Cyrene: standing beside a wooden cross beam resting safely on the ground, no crucifixion imagery

Who was Simon of Cyrene?

Simon of Cyrene was the man compelled to carry Jesus' cross. Mark names his sons Alexander and Rufus. He is distinct from Simon Peter and Simon the Zealot.

The account describes Simon being made to carry the cross as Jesus was led to crucifixion. We should not invent his feelings or claim the text says he freely volunteered.

Simon of Cyrene carrying a wooden cross along a quiet road, soldiers at a respectful distance indicating the compelled task, no injury or graphic detail.
