Bible verses for children

A quiet moment for Elijah.

1 Kings 19:12

Elijah, a bearded ancient prophet in a simple brown cloak, stands calmly at a cave entrance listening to a gentle breeze after a storm
After the earthquake a fire passed; but Yahweh was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a still small voice.

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

Elijah experiences wind, an earthquake and fire, followed by a still small voice. God’s meeting with him is not simply the biggest or loudest event. The quiet moment invites Elijah to listen. It does not mean that every quiet thought in our heads is a message from God.

You can make a calm space to pray and think about a Bible passage. If you are unsure about an idea, talk it through with a trusted adult rather than treating it as an instruction you must follow.

Bible context & readings +

Elijah has fled in fear and feels alone. Earlier in 1 Kings 19 he receives food and rest; at Horeb he speaks about his distress and receives a renewed task. Read the whole encounter rather than making one sound the only way God can communicate.
