Bible verses for children

God looks at the heart.

1 Samuel 16:7

Elderly Samuel listens thoughtfully beside young shepherd David and several taller brothers in a village courtyard
But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.”

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

Samuel sees a tall man and thinks he might make a good king. God tells him that appearance is not enough. The heart means the person within: their loyalties, intentions and choices. We cannot decide someone’s worth or character just by looking at them.

A quiet classmate may be a thoughtful friend, and someone who looks confident may need help. Get to know people instead of guessing what they are like from their clothes or size.

Talk about it

What could you learn about a person by listening rather than looking?

Bible context & readings +

Samuel has come to Jesse’s family to anoint a new king. In 1 Samuel 16:1–13, Jesse’s sons are considered and David is called from tending sheep. The verse concerns God’s choice; it does not say that David will never make serious mistakes.
