Bible verses for children

Honour the people who care for you.

Exodus 20:12

A parent kindly demonstrates how to put away shared craft materials while a child listens and helps, both warm and respectful
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.

Exodus 20:12 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

To honour your father and mother means to treat them as people who matter. Listening, speaking respectfully and helping are ways to show honour. Families can look different, and children may be cared for by other adults too. Honour does not mean keeping quiet if someone hurts you.

You might thank a carer for making lunch or listen when they explain how to stay safe. If an adult asks you to do something harmful, tell another trusted adult and keep asking for help.

Bible context & readings +

This command addresses Israel as they learn to live as God’s people. Its promise concerns life in the land God gives them. It is not a guarantee that every obedient child will live longer than every other child, and it never gives adults permission to harm children.
