Printing tipsThe story behind the craft
Bible passage: Exodus 19–20
Suggested verses to explore: Exodus 19:3, Exodus 19:18, Exodus 19:8
After bringing Israel out of Egypt, God makes a covenant with the people at Sinai. The commandments describe faithfulness to God and responsibilities towards neighbours, including truthfulness, rest and respect for life.
Main takeaway: The commandments connect love for God with how we treat other people.
While you colour
Read one featured verse aloud and ask learners to connect its meaning with the bookmark picture.
Choose one commandment about neighbours and turn it into a concrete example involving truth, rest, belongings or care for someone’s life.
Younger learners can name visible details while an adult reads. Older learners can look up the verse and read the sentences around it before explaining its meaning.
Questions to explore
- What had God already done for Israel?
- Which commandment concerns telling the truth?
- How does respecting another person’s belongings show care?
Common questions
What files are included in this download?
The download is a 2-page PDF: TenCommandments.pdf. This is the English edition. You print the files yourself; physical supplies are not included.
Are the picture fronts and verse backs separate?
Yes. The two-page PDF has four picture fronts and four matching verse backs. Colour the fronts, match each picture to its verse and cut the pieces apart. You can glue matching fronts and backs together to make four double-sided bookmarks. For a Bible reading to accompany this activity, use Exodus 19–20. The designs are listed as: Exodus 19:3: Moses Goes Up the Mountain; Exodus 19:18: Mount Sinai Covered in Smoke; Exodus 20:1: God Speaks His Words; Exodus 19:8: The People Promise to Obey.
Which pages should I print, and at what size?
The original PDF pages are A4 landscape. TenCommandments.pdf: print the pages you want to use for each learner or group. Print single-sided. On US Letter paper, select Letter and Fit or shrink to the printable area; the originals are not separate Letter-sized files. Keep matching construction pages at the same scale. Print both pages for the four front-and-back designs. If you choose duplex printing instead of gluing, test your printer’s alignment on scrap paper first.
What supplies and preparation does this need?
Paper or printer-compatible light card, colouring pencils, scissors and glue if you join the fronts and backs. Lamination is optional.
What help might children need with this activity?
Suggested ages: 6–12 years. Prepare the bookmarks if needed and read or discuss each verse together. Adjust this guide for the child’s reading and making skills.
