Bible verses for children

Tell the truth about others.

Exodus 20:16

Moses: holding two plain stone tablets beside a mountain, no written characters
“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

Exodus 20:16 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

False testimony means giving an untrue account about another person. A witness tells what they know about something that happened. A false accusation can cause someone to be blamed unfairly. This command asks us to care about truth and our neighbour’s good name.

If you did not see who broke a toy, say that you do not know. You can explain what you actually saw without guessing or repeating a rumour.

Talk about it

How is saying “I don’t know” sometimes the most honest answer?

Bible context & readings +

The command in Exodus 20:16 especially concerns speaking as a witness against a neighbour. Its concern for truth also helps us think about gossip and unfair blame. Telling a trusted adult truthfully about harm is right; it is not unkind testimony.
