Bible verses for children

God says, “I AM.”

Exodus 3:14

Moses standing respectfully at a safe distance from a softly glowing bush, sandals set aside, no human depiction of God
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM,” and he said, “You shall tell the children of Israel this: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”

Exodus 3:14 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

Moses asks what he should say when people ask who sent him. God answers, “I AM WHO I AM.” These words point to God’s identity, which Moses cannot reduce to a simple description. Moses is being sent by the living God, who has heard his people’s suffering.

We can ask honest questions about God without needing to understand everything at once. Moses asks questions while learning what his difficult task will be.

Bible context & readings +

At the burning bush, God calls Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery. Read Exodus 3:1–15 together: the name is given alongside God’s concern for the people and his promise to be with Moses. The next verse identifies him as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
