In simple words

What does this verse mean?

After hearing God’s questions about the world, Job recognises that his understanding is limited. God’s purposes are greater than what Job can see. This does not explain every painful thing that happened to him. It shows that an honest person can admit, “I do not know.”

You may not know why something sad happened. You can ask questions, accept comfort and say you are unsure. You do not need to invent an answer to sound brave or faithful.

Talk about it

When is it helpful to say that we do not know the answer?

Bible context & readings +

Job responds after the speeches about creation in the closing chapters. Job 42:1–6 expresses a changed perspective; later God challenges the friends’ claims. The verse is not a reason to blame suffering people or tell them that their questions were pointless.
