In simple words

What does this verse mean?

John the Baptist says Jesus’ role must increase while his own becomes smaller. He understands his work as pointing towards Jesus. Humility can include gladness when attention moves to someone else.

Celebrate another person’s contribution without needing to bring the attention back to yourself.

Bible context & readings +

John 3:22–30 describes concern about people going to Jesus. John answers with joy and the image of a bridegroom’s friend. His decrease concerns his particular role, not losing human worth.
