Bible verses for children

Following Jesus changes our priorities.

Luke 9:23

Jesus in a simple cream robe with muted blue cloak walks along a safe village path with a small group of attentive followers, kindly explaining and guiding, faces warm and thoughtful
He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

Taking up a cross describes costly discipleship, not merely any small inconvenience. Following Jesus can challenge selfish priorities. It never means a child must accept abuse or seek injury.

Choose a truthful action even when it costs you an unfair advantage.

Talk about it

What might following Jesus change about an easy but selfish choice?

Bible context & readings +

Luke 9:22–26 follows Jesus’ announcement of his own suffering. The cross was an instrument of execution, making the image serious. Read it as allegiance to Jesus, not permission for others to cause harm.
