Bible verses for children

Celebrate, and make room for others.

Nehemiah 8:10

An ancient community joyfully gathers gifts of food and materials at a shared table, a leader gives thanks while neighbors set aside portions for a family without food
Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.”

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

The people have been listening to God’s teaching and crying. They are told that this holy day is a time to celebrate and share food. The joy of the Lord strengthens the community as they understand and respond together. Their celebration must include people who have nothing prepared.

When you celebrate with a snack, notice whether everyone has something they can eat. Sharing the joy can matter as much as enjoying the treat yourself.

Talk about it

How could a celebration include someone who might otherwise be left out?

Bible context & readings +

Ezra reads the law while helpers explain it to the gathered people. Nehemiah 8:1–12 describes their tears and the instruction to rejoice on this holy day. It is not a command to stop crying whenever we are sad; the occasion and the sharing of food matter.
