Bible verses for children

A smile does not tell the whole story.

Proverbs 14:13

A sad child with a tear on their cheek is gently listened to by a caring adult who holds a cloth, a small glass bottle on the nearby table subtly evokes counted tears
Even in laughter the heart may be sorrowful, and mirth may end in heaviness.

Proverbs 14:13 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

Someone can laugh while still feeling sad inside. Outward behaviour gives only part of the picture. We do not need to assume every smile hides a problem, but we can leave room for people to tell us how they really feel.

If a friend seems cheerful but you know they have had a difficult week, gently ask how they are. Let them choose whether to talk.

Talk about it

How could you make room for an honest answer about feelings?

Bible context & readings +

This saying observes that laughter and sorrow can exist together and that merriment may end in sadness. It does not condemn laughter. It encourages a realistic understanding of emotions rather than judging another person’s inner life by appearances alone.
