The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

Fear of the Lord includes awe, respect and taking God seriously. It is more than being startled or frightened. The verse places knowing God at the beginning of wisdom, so wise living grows from respect for goodness beyond our own preferences.

When deciding what to do, ask whether your choice respects God and other people. You can take something seriously without feeling terrified.

Bible context & readings +

Proverbs repeatedly connects wisdom with reverence for God. Here the reference to knowing the Holy One joins respect with understanding. The verse should not be used to frighten children into obedience to any adult who claims to speak for God.
