Bible verses for children

Near to a broken heart.

Psalm 34:18

A sad child with a tear on their cheek is gently listened to by a caring adult who holds a cloth, a small glass bottle on the nearby table subtly evokes counted tears
Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

Psalm 34:18 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

A broken heart is a picture of deep sadness, not a heart that has physically snapped. A crushed spirit means feeling weighed down or discouraged. The psalm says these people are not forgotten by God. Needing comfort is not a failure of faith.

If someone is grieving, you can sit beside them and listen. You do not have to find words that make everything better. A trusted adult can help you know how to care.

Talk about it

What could you say to show someone they do not have to be sad alone?

Bible context & readings +

Psalm 34 speaks about God hearing people in trouble. The verses around this one acknowledge that faithful people face many afflictions. Its comfort is God’s nearness, not a promise that pain ends immediately or that we should stop seeking support.
