Who was Eli?
Eli was a priest at Shiloh when Hannah prayed there and Samuel was growing up. He helped Samuel understand his call. The Bible also describes serious wrongdoing by Eli's sons and failures in his response.
Eli first misunderstood Hannah's prayer, but listened when she explained. Later, he helped Samuel respond to something the boy did not understand.
