Meet Philemon.

A recipient challenged about welcome.

Philemon: a quiet historically appropriate setting for A recipient challenged about welcome, with simple understated contextual details; no invented dramatic event

Who was Philemon?

Philemon was a recipient of a letter from Paul and part of a church meeting in a home. The letter concerns Onesimus, who was enslaved. Its historical setting must be explained without excusing slavery.

Paul appealed to Philemon to welcome Onesimus as a beloved brother. This calls attention to the dignity of the person whose future was being discussed.

Philemon reading Paul's letter as Onesimus arrives, meeting him at eye level as a fellow believer, no chains.
