Bible verses for children

The beginning of God’s world.

Genesis 1:1

A beautiful panorama of creation: sunlit mountains, ocean, river, lush trees, flowers, birds in the sky, deer and small animals on the shore, fish visible in clear water
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1 · World English Bible Classic (WEB)

In simple words

What does this verse mean?

Genesis begins by telling us that the world comes from God. “The heavens and the earth” means the whole created world. Before the story introduces people, it introduces the Creator. This opening helps us look at the world with wonder and thankfulness.

Look closely at a leaf, a cloud or a tiny insect. You can ask how it grows and also thank God for the world you are discovering. Wonder and careful questions can go together.

Bible context & readings +

This is the opening sentence of Genesis. The following verses describe darkness, water, light and God naming day and night. It introduces the creation account; it does not give us a classroom timetable for investigating how the universe developed.
