01Honour those who serve and leadThe passage begins by asking believers to know those who labour among them, are over them in the Lord, and admonish them.
Explanation
The passage begins by asking believers to know those who labour among them, are over them in the Lord, and admonish them. “Know” here includes recognising and valuing them. They are to be respected and honoured in love because of their work, and the whole group is told to be at peace among themselves.
02Care for different needs with patienceThe commands then widen to the whole church. The disorderly need admonition, the faint-hearted need encouragement, and the weak need support.
Explanation
The commands then widen to the whole church. The disorderly need admonition, the faint-hearted need encouragement, and the weak need support. These are not all treated in the same way. Patience is required toward all, and nobody is to repay evil for evil. Instead, they must keep pursuing what is good for one another and for all.
03Practise constant joy, prayer, and thanksThree very short commands stand together: always rejoice, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in everything.
Explanation
Three very short commands stand together: always rejoice, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in everything. The passage does not say to give thanks only when life is easy. It says “in everything” give thanks, and it links this thankful way of life to the will of God in Christ Jesus toward them.
04Be open, but test carefullyThe final commands balance openness with discernment. Believers must not quench the Spirit or despise prophecies.
Explanation
The final commands balance openness with discernment. Believers must not quench the Spirit or despise prophecies. At the same time, they must test all things. The goal is not to accept everything without thought, but to hold firmly to what is good and to stay away from every form of evil.
