Creature worship is exposed through its own punishment

This passage explains a sharp irony in God’s judgment. People who treated creatures as gods were punished through those same creatures, so their false worship was exposed and God’s true identity became plain.

01Judged through their own abominationsThe passage opens by saying the unrighteous lived in folly and were tormented through their own abominations.

Explanation

The passage opens by saying the unrighteous lived in folly and were tormented through their own abominations. That means the judgment matched the wrong itself. Instead of describing a separate punishment, the writer points to a consequence connected directly to what they had embraced.

02Creatures treated as godsTheir error is then named clearly. They went far astray by taking animals as gods, even animals regarded with dishonour among their enemies.

Explanation

Their error is then named clearly. They went far astray by taking animals as gods, even animals regarded with dishonour among their enemies. The comparison to foolish babes stresses lack of understanding. The passage exposes creature worship as deep error, not true knowledge of God.

03A mild correction they should have noticedVerse 25 says God sent judgment to mock them, as with unreasoning children. Then verse 26 adds that some still would not be admonished by mild correction.

Explanation

Verse 25 says God sent judgment to mock them, as with unreasoning children. Then verse 26 adds that some still would not be admonished by mild correction. The contrast is important: there was a warning aspect first, but refusing correction led on to deserved judgment.

04They saw and recognised the true GodThe final verse explains the result. Through sufferings connected with the creatures they had supposed to be gods, they saw and recognised the true God whom they had previously refused to know.

Explanation

The final verse explains the result. Through sufferings connected with the creatures they had supposed to be gods, they saw and recognised the true God whom they had previously refused to know. The passage then ends by saying that the result of extreme condemnation came upon them.

Wisdom of Solomon 12:23–27

23Therefore also the unrighteous that lived in a life of folly, you tormented through their own abominations.

24For truly they went astray very far in the ways of error, Taking as gods those animals which even among their enemies were held in dishonor, deceived like foolish babes.

25Therefore, as to unreasoning children, you sent your judgment to mock them.

26But those who would not be admonished by mild correction will experience the deserved judgment of God.

27For through the sufferings they were indignant of, being punished in these creatures which they supposed to be gods, they saw and recognized as the true God him whom they previously refused to know. Therefore also the result of extreme condemnation came upon them.
