01Praise, promise, and postureSolomon stands before the altar and spreads out his hands, and Chronicles adds that he kneels on a bronze platform.

Explanation

Solomon stands before the altar and spreads out his hands, and Chronicles adds that he kneels on a bronze platform. He says there is no God like Yahweh, who keeps covenant and loving kindness. He says God has fulfilled what he promised David and asks that this word continue to stand.

02God is not contained by the houseSolomon says even heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain God, much less the house he has built.

Explanation

Solomon says even heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain God, much less the house he has built. Yet he asks God to respect this prayer, keep his eyes on this house, hear from heaven when people pray toward it, and forgive. The temple is linked with God’s name, but heaven remains God’s dwelling place.

03Trouble, confession, and God who knows heartsSolomon names several situations: disputes between neighbours, defeat before enemies, drought, famine, pestilence, blight, mildew, locusts, caterpillar, plague, sickness, and personal sorrow.

Explanation

Solomon names several situations: disputes between neighbours, defeat before enemies, drought, famine, pestilence, blight, mildew, locusts, caterpillar, plague, sickness, and personal sorrow. Across these requests he asks God to hear from heaven, judge rightly, forgive, act, and teach the good way, because God alone knows human hearts. The aim is that people may fear him and walk in his ways.

04Foreigner, battle, captivity, and the two endingsSolomon asks God to hear the foreigner, so all peoples may know God’s name. He also prays for those who go to battle and for captives who repent and return with all their heart and soul.

Explanation

Solomon asks God to hear the foreigner, so all peoples may know God’s name. He also prays for those who go to battle and for captives who repent and return with all their heart and soul. Kings ends with Israel as God’s inheritance from Egypt. Chronicles ends by asking God to be attentive, arise to his resting place, clothe priests with salvation, let saints rejoice in goodness, and remember David.

Questions to explore

Pause, look back at the verses and talk together.

01Why does Solomon say God cannot be contained by the house, yet still ask people to pray toward it?

Look for the contrast between God’s greatness beyond heaven and the house as the place where God has put his name.

02What repeated response does Solomon ask for when people sin or suffer?

Notice how the prayer often moves from confession and supplication to the request that God hear, forgive, and act.

03How do the two endings keep different emphases?

Compare the Kings ending about Israel as God’s inheritance with the Chronicles ending about God’s resting place, priests, saints, and David.

1 Kings 8:22–53

22Solomon stood before Yahweh’s altar in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven;

23and he said, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven above, or on earth beneath; who keeps covenant and loving kindness with your servants who walk before you with all their heart;

24who has kept with your servant David my father that which you promised him. Yes, you spoke with your mouth, and have fulfilled it with your hand, as it is today.

25Now therefore, may Yahweh, the God of Israel, keep with your servant David my father that which you have promised him, saying, ‘There shall not fail from you a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children take heed to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.’

26“Now therefore, God of Israel, please let your word be verified, which you spoke to your servant David my father.

27But will God in very deed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens can’t contain you; how much less this house that I have built!

28Yet have respect for the prayer of your servant and for his supplication, Yahweh my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer which your servant prays before you today;

29that your eyes may be open toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which you have said, ‘My name shall be there;’ to listen to the prayer which your servant prays toward this place.

30Listen to the supplication of your servant, and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Yes, hear in heaven, your dwelling place; and when you hear, forgive.

31“If a man sins against his neighbor, and an oath is laid on him to cause him to swear, and he comes and swears before your altar in this house,

32then hear in heaven, and act, and judge your servants, condemning the wicked, to bring his way on his own head, and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.

33“When your people Israel are struck down before the enemy because they have sinned against you, if they turn again to you and confess your name, and pray and make supplication to you in this house,

34then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them again to the land which you gave to their fathers.

35“When the sky is shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against you, if they pray toward this place and confess your name, and turn from their sin when you afflict them,

36then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of your servants, and of your people Israel, when you teach them the good way in which they should walk; and send rain on your land which you have given to your people for an inheritance.

37“If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight, mildew, locust or caterpillar; if their enemy besieges them in the land of their cities, whatever plague, whatever sickness there is,

38whatever prayer and supplication is made by any man, or by all your people Israel, who shall each know the plague of his own heart, and spread out his hands toward this house,

39then hear in heaven, your dwelling place, and forgive, and act, and give to every man according to all his ways, whose heart you know (for you, even you only, know the hearts of all the children of men);

40that they may fear you all the days that they live in the land which you gave to our fathers.

41“Moreover, concerning the foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, when he comes out of a far country for your name’s sake

42(for they shall hear of your great name and of your mighty hand and of your outstretched arm), when he comes and prays toward this house,

43hear in heaven, your dwelling place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you for; that all the peoples of the earth may know your name, to fear you, as do your people Israel, and that they may know that this house which I have built is called by your name.

44“If your people go out to battle against their enemy, by whatever way you shall send them, and they pray to Yahweh toward the city which you have chosen, and toward the house which I have built for your name,

45then hear in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause.

46If they sin against you (for there is no man who doesn’t sin), and you are angry with them and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive to the land of the enemy, far off or near;

47yet if they repent in the land where they are carried captive, and turn again, and make supplication to you in the land of those who carried them captive, saying, ‘We have sinned and have done perversely; we have dealt wickedly,’

48if they return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies who carried them captive, and pray to you toward their land which you gave to their fathers, the city which you have chosen and the house which I have built for your name,

49then hear their prayer and their supplication in heaven, your dwelling place, and maintain their cause;

50and forgive your people who have sinned against you, and all their transgressions in which they have transgressed against you; and give them compassion before those who carried them captive, that they may have compassion on them

51(for they are your people and your inheritance, which you brought out of Egypt, from the middle of the iron furnace);

52that your eyes may be open to the supplication of your servant and to the supplication of your people Israel, to listen to them whenever they cry to you.

53For you separated them from among all the peoples of the earth to be your inheritance, as you spoke by Moses your servant, when you brought our fathers out of Egypt, Lord Yahweh.”

2 Chronicles 6:12–42

12He stood before Yahweh’s altar in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands

13(for Solomon had made a bronze platform, five cubits long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the middle of the court; and he stood on it, and knelt down on his knees before all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven).

14Then he said, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven or on earth—you who keep covenant and loving kindness with your servants who walk before you with all their heart;

15who have kept with your servant David my father that which you promised him. Yes, you spoke with your mouth, and have fulfilled it with your hand, as it is today.

16“Now therefore, Yahweh, the God of Israel, keep with your servant David my father that which you have promised him, saying, ‘There shall not fail you a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children take heed to their way, to walk in my law as you have walked before me.’

17Now therefore, Yahweh, the God of Israel, let your word be verified, which you spoke to your servant David.

18“But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens can’t contain you; how much less this house which I have built!

19Yet have respect for the prayer of your servant and to his supplication, Yahweh my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer which your servant prays before you;

20that your eyes may be open toward this house day and night, even toward the place where you have said that you would put your name, to listen to the prayer which your servant will pray toward this place.

21Listen to the petitions of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Yes, hear from your dwelling place, even from heaven; and when you hear, forgive.

22“If a man sins against his neighbor, and an oath is laid on him to cause him to swear, and he comes and swears before your altar in this house,

23then hear from heaven, act, and judge your servants, bringing retribution to the wicked, to bring his way on his own head; and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.

24“If your people Israel are struck down before the enemy because they have sinned against you, and they turn again and confess your name, and pray and make supplication before you in this house,

25then hear from heaven, and forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them again to the land which you gave to them and to their fathers.

26“When the sky is shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against you, if they pray toward this place and confess your name, and turn from their sin when you afflict them,

27then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel, when you teach them the good way in which they should walk, and send rain on your land, which you have given to your people for an inheritance.

28“If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight or mildew, locust or caterpillar; if their enemies besiege them in the land of their cities; whatever plague or whatever sickness there is—

29whatever prayer and supplication is made by any man, or by all your people Israel, who will each know his own plague and his own sorrow, and shall spread out his hands toward this house,

30then hear from heaven your dwelling place and forgive, and give to every man according to all his ways, whose heart you know (for you, even you only, know the hearts of the children of men),

31that they may fear you, to walk in your ways as long as they live in the land which you gave to our fathers.

32“Moreover, concerning the foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, when he comes from a far country for your great name’s sake and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm, when they come and pray toward this house,

33then hear from heaven, even from your dwelling place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you for; that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and that they may know that this house which I have built is called by your name.

34“If your people go out to battle against their enemies, by whatever way you send them, and they pray to you toward this city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for your name;

35then hear from heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause.

36“If they sin against you (for there is no man who doesn’t sin), and you are angry with them and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive to a land far off or near;

37yet if they come to their senses in the land where they are carried captive, and turn again, and make supplication to you in the land of their captivity, saying, ‘We have sinned, we have done perversely, and have dealt wickedly;’

38if they return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity, where they have been taken captive, and pray toward their land which you gave to their fathers, and the city which you have chosen, and toward the house which I have built for your name;

39then hear from heaven, even from your dwelling place, their prayer and their petitions, and maintain their cause, and forgive your people who have sinned against you.

40“Now, my God, let, I beg you, your eyes be open, and let your ears be attentive to the prayer that is made in this place.

41“Now therefore arise, Yahweh God, into your resting place, you, and the ark of your strength. Let your priests, Yahweh God, be clothed with salvation, and let your saints rejoice in goodness.

42“Yahweh God, don’t turn away the face of your anointed. Remember your loving kindnesses to David your servant.”
