The Book of Remembrance

Malachi 3:13–18 contrasts two ways of speaking about God. Some people say serving God is useless, while others fear Yahweh and honour his name. The passage shows that Yahweh hears both kinds of words and makes a real distinction between people.

Understanding the passage

The setting of this message

In this passage, Yahweh answers harsh words spoken against him. The complaint says there is no profit in serving God because the proud and wicked seem to prosper and escape. In contrast, another group fears Yahweh, speaks together, and is remembered before him in a book of memory.

Malachi 3:13–18

Main takeaway

This passage teaches that Yahweh hears what people say about him, remembers those who fear him, and will finally show the difference between serving God and refusing him.

01Harsh words against YahwehThe passage begins with Yahweh saying, “Your words have been harsh against me”. The people answer with a question, asking what they have said.

Explanation

The passage begins with Yahweh saying, “Your words have been harsh against me”. The people answer with a question, asking what they have said. This opening matters because Yahweh is not speaking about hidden thoughts here, but about words that have been spoken against him and can be answered directly.

02The complaint about serving GodThe harsh words are then explained. Some say, “It is vain to serve God,” and ask what profit there is in following his instructions and walking mournfully before Yahweh of Armies.

Explanation

The harsh words are then explained. Some say, “It is vain to serve God,” and ask what profit there is in following his instructions and walking mournfully before Yahweh of Armies. They also say the proud are happy, the wicked are built up, and those who tempt God escape. Their complaint is about usefulness, profit, and what they think they see.

03Those who feared YahwehAgainst that complaint, the passage introduces a different group: “those who feared Yahweh”.

Explanation

Against that complaint, the passage introduces a different group: “those who feared Yahweh”. They spoke with one another, and Yahweh “listened and heard”. A “book of memory” was written before him for those who feared Yahweh and honoured his name. The image shows that Yahweh does not overlook reverence and faithful speech.

04Yahweh’s own possessionYahweh of Armies says these people “shall be mine”, calling them “my own possession”. He also says, “I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him.”

Explanation

Yahweh of Armies says these people “shall be mine”, calling them “my own possession”. He also says, “I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him.” The comparison explains care and recognition. The verse does not erase the difference between people. It highlights Yahweh’s regard for those who serve him.

05A clear distinction will be seenThe passage ends with a promise that “you shall return and discern” between the righteous and the wicked, and between one who serves God and one who does not.

Explanation

The passage ends with a promise that “you shall return and discern” between the righteous and the wicked, and between one who serves God and one who does not. Earlier, the people complained that the wicked seemed to escape. This ending answers that complaint by saying the difference will be recognised.

Malachi 3:13–18

13“Your words have been harsh against me,” says Yahweh. “Yet you say, ‘What have we spoken against you?’

14You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God,’ and ‘What profit is it that we have followed his instructions and that we have walked mournfully before Yahweh of Armies?

15Now we call the proud happy; yes, those who work wickedness are built up; yes, they tempt God, and escape.’

16Then those who feared Yahweh spoke one with another; and Yahweh listened and heard, and a book of memory was written before him for those who feared Yahweh and who honored his name.

17They shall be mine,” says Yahweh of Armies, “my own possession in the day that I make. I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him.

18Then you shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who doesn’t serve him.
