Printing tips

The story behind the craft

Bible passage: Genesis 22:1–19

Abraham takes Isaac up the mountain after God’s difficult command. An angel stops Abraham from harming his son, and a ram is provided for the offering instead.

Main takeaway: At the turning point, God stops Abraham and provides the ram.

As the picture changes

View the folded design from each side and compare the two images before explaining their connection.

Locate the moment when the angel stops Abraham and the ram is found. Keep the discussion on God’s provision, not on acting out the threatened harm.

Younger learners can describe what changes as they move. Older learners can explain whether the images show a before-and-after moment or two parts of the same account.

Questions to explore

  • Who stopped Abraham?
  • What was provided instead of Isaac?
  • Why is the ending important when we tell this difficult story?

Common questions

What files are included in this download?

The download is a 3-page PDF: AbrahamandIsaac.pdf. This is the English edition. You print the files yourself; physical supplies are not included.

How do the two pictures appear?

Colour the picture strips, cut them out and paste them onto the backing in A–J order. Let the glue dry, then make the alternating accordion folds. Look from the left and right to see the two different pictures. The effect comes from the folds, with no screen or moving parts. The pictured scenes include: Abraham holding the knife in obedience; The angel stopping him and the ram provided.

Which pages should I print, and at what size?

The original PDF pages are A4 landscape. AbrahamandIsaac.pdf: print pages 1, 2 for each learner or group. Page 3 is the assembly guide, which can be shared. Print single-sided. On US Letter paper, select Letter and Fit or shrink to the printable area; the originals are not separate Letter-sized files. Keep matching construction pages at the same scale.

What supplies and preparation does this need?

Paper, colouring pencils, scissors and glue. A ruler can help make straight creases. Adult help is useful for the narrow strips, alphabetical order and even folds.

What help might children need with this activity?

Suggested ages: 8–12 years. Help with trimming the narrow strips, arranging them in order and making even folds. Adjust this guide for the child’s reading and making skills.
