Getting ready

Age & adult help

Following several illustrated panels and reading speech or story text adds a literacy demand to the colouring.

Read panels aloud and help children follow their order. Check the story and wording before using it with younger children.

What you’ll need

Printer, paper, colouring pencils or crayons. An adult reader may be helpful for younger children.

Time & preparation

One comic page, including colouring. Shared reading and discussion are additional.

Check the file before you print for a group, and allow for any extra help the kids might need.

Printing tips

The story behind the craft

Bible passage: Genesis 28:10–22

Travelling alone, Jacob sleeps with a stone at his head and dreams of a stairway reaching heaven. God renews the promise to his family and assures him of companionship on the journey.

Main takeaway: Jacob receives a promise of God’s presence away from home.

While you colour the panels

Read the panels in order, pausing at a change in a character’s action or understanding.

Compare the lonely resting place with the dream and Jacob’s response on waking. Explain that the stairway belongs to the dream, not to a building instruction.

Younger learners can describe an action in one panel. Older learners can compare a caption with its Bible passage and discuss what a short comic leaves out.

Questions to explore

  • Where did Jacob sleep?
  • What assurance did he receive?
  • What helps someone feel less alone in an unfamiliar place?

Common questions

What files are included in this download?

The download is a 1-page PDF: JacobsLadder_Genesis28.pdf. This is the English edition. You print the files yourself; physical supplies are not included.

Is this a comic to read or a colouring sheet?

It combines both on one page: outlined comic panels with story captions. Read the panels in sequence, then colour and talk about the illustrated moments. It is a flat printable, with no paper mechanism to assemble. For a Bible reading to accompany this activity, use Genesis 28:10–22.

Which pages should I print, and at what size?

The original PDF pages are A4 portrait. JacobsLadder_Genesis28.pdf: print the page for each learner or group. Print single-sided. On US Letter paper, select Letter and Fit or shrink to the printable area; the originals are not separate Letter-sized files.

What supplies and preparation does this need?

Printer paper and colouring pencils or crayons. An adult can read the captions and help children follow the order of the panels.

What help might children need with this activity?

Suggested ages: 7–12 years. Read panels aloud and help children follow their order. Check the story and wording before using it with younger children. Adjust this guide for the child’s reading and making skills.
