Getting ready

Age & adult help

Following several illustrated panels and reading speech or story text adds a literacy demand to the colouring.

Read panels aloud and help children follow their order. Check the story and wording before using it with younger children.

What you’ll need

Printer, paper, colouring pencils or crayons. An adult reader may be helpful for younger children.

Check the file before you print for a group, and allow for any extra help the kids might need.

Printing tips

The story behind the craft

Bible passage: John 6:1–13

A crowd gathers to hear Jesus, and a boy’s five barley loaves and two fish are brought forward. Jesus gives thanks and distributes food; everyone eats, and twelve baskets of pieces remain.

Main takeaway: Jesus responds to the crowd’s hunger with generous provision.

While you colour the panels

Read the panels in order, pausing at a change in a character’s action or understanding.

Count the loaves and fish, then compare the small beginning with the baskets left over. Talk about gratitude and sharing rather than promising food will multiply in an activity.

Younger learners can describe an action in one panel. Older learners can compare a caption with its Bible passage and discuss what a short comic leaves out.

Questions to explore

  • What food did the boy have?
  • What did Jesus do before sharing it?
  • What could we share with someone who needs help?

Common questions

What files are included in this download?

The download is a 1-page PDF: JesusFeedsthe5000.pdf. This is the English edition. You print the files yourself; physical supplies are not included.

Is this a comic to read or a colouring sheet?

It combines both on one page: outlined comic panels with story captions. Read the panels in sequence, then colour and talk about the illustrated moments. It is a flat printable, with no paper mechanism to assemble. Printed captions include “The disciples worry about how to feed the hungry crowd” and “Jesus sees a large crowd by the sea, and they are hungry”.

Which pages should I print, and at what size?

The original PDF pages are A4 portrait. JesusFeedsthe5000.pdf: print the page for each learner or group. Print single-sided. On US Letter paper, select Letter and Fit or shrink to the printable area; the originals are not separate Letter-sized files.

What supplies and preparation does this need?

Printer paper and colouring pencils or crayons. An adult can read the captions and help children follow the order of the panels.

What help might children need with this activity?

Suggested ages: 7–12 years. Read panels aloud and help children follow their order. Check the story and wording before using it with younger children. Adjust this guide for the child’s reading and making skills.
