Printing tipsThe story behind the craft
Bible passage: Luke 24:13–35
Two disciples walk to Emmaus in sorrow and talk with a stranger who explains the Scriptures. At a meal they recognise the risen Jesus as he breaks bread, then return to share the news.
Main takeaway: The Emmaus story moves from disappointment towards recognition and hope.
As you slide the story through
Slide the film strip slowly and pause at each frame to connect the picture with the reading.
Compare the conversation on the road with the moment at the table. Ask what the travellers understand differently at the end.
An adult can read the captions for a younger child. Older learners can retell a frame without its caption, then check which details the Bible account supplies.
Questions to explore
- Why were the travellers sad?
- When did they recognise Jesus?
- How can a conversation help us see something differently?
Common questions
What files are included in this download?
The download is a 3-page PDF: TheRoadtoEmmaus.pdf. This is the English edition. You print the files yourself; physical supplies are not included.
Does the paper camera actually show a story?
Yes. Colour and cut out the camera body and illustrated film strip. Prepare the two marked camera slots, feed the strip through the lower slot from the back and out through the upper slot, then slide it to reveal the frames. It is a paper storytelling model, not a working photographic camera. Printed captions include “Two friends walked sadly down the road” and “Jesus came near and walked with them”.
Which pages should I print, and at what size?
The original PDF pages are A4 portrait. TheRoadtoEmmaus.pdf: print pages 1, 3 for each learner or group. Page 2 is the assembly guide, which can be shared. Print single-sided. On US Letter paper, select Letter and Fit or shrink to the printable area; the originals are not separate Letter-sized files. Keep matching construction pages at the same scale.
What supplies and preparation does this need?
Paper or printer-compatible light card, colouring pencils and scissors. An adult should cut the slots and help thread the strip so the pictures move without tearing.
What help might children need with this activity?
Suggested ages: 7–12 years. An adult may need to cut the camera slots and help thread the strip. Younger children can colour and retell using an adult-assembled camera. Adjust this guide for the child’s reading and making skills.
Reviews
Great craft recapping the Bible story for the kids to take home.
Unusual & very good quality craft.Only down side was people looked different in each frame so a little confusing for my younger Sunday club kids
The kids liked this project
The pictures were not consistent, from one picture to the the next, so it was confusing for the children to identify which character was which in subsequent images. Not just one inconsistency - multiple! A brilliant idea for a craft, but very poorly executed.
awesome project. Used in a Children Liturgy program.
Smaller than expected but cute!
I love the idea of this craft with the pictures and the camera roll it would be perfect for my kids group at church... however when I received the PDF I looked more closely at the images of the two men on the road to Emmaus they varied in each picture, different hair styles, beard/no beard, head dress, different clothing. Jesus also was wearing different clothing and looked different throughout the images on the camera film.
This meas that there is no continuity of characters as the story progresses so a simple story with 3 characters looks like it has 7 or more because they look different each image. Very confusing for me not to mention the children that I planned to use the craft. I think I need to find a better resource.
