1 Corinthians 2: Paul’s Message by the Spirit’s Power

1 Corinthians 2:1–5; 1 Corinthians 2:6–16

In this lesson, children will see that Paul did not want people trusting clever words. He pointed to Jesus Christ crucified and to the Spirit’s power, and he explained that God’s wisdom is known through the Spirit.

Before you teach

In 1 Corinthians 2, Paul explains how he spoke when he came to the believers. He says his message was centred on Jesus Christ and him crucified, and he contrasts human wisdom with God’s wisdom revealed through the Spirit. The passage moves from Paul’s preaching to how God’s Spirit helps people know what God has given.

Learning aim

Students will be able to say that Paul’s message centred on Jesus Christ crucified, and that God’s wisdom is revealed through the Spirit rather than grounded in human wisdom.

1

Welcome: What makes something sound wise?

5 min

Begin by asking children what people usually think makes a speaker impressive: strong words, confidence, or clever ideas. Then explain that Paul said he did not come with excellence of speech or human wisdom. He wanted the Corinthians to hear God’s testimony and to focus on Jesus Christ and him crucified.

1 Corinthians 2:1, 1 Corinthians 2:2

2

Read and explain: Paul’s message and God’s power

7 min

Read verses 1 to 5 aloud. Point out that Paul describes himself as weak, fearful, and trembling, yet his preaching showed the Spirit and power. Explain that Paul’s aim was for their faith not to stand in human wisdom but in the power of God. Help children notice the difference between trusting a speaker and trusting God.

1 Corinthians 2:3, 1 Corinthians 2:4, 1 Corinthians 2:5

3

Discuss: God’s wisdom is revealed by the Spirit

6 min

Read verses 6 to 13. Explain that Paul says God’s wisdom is not the wisdom of this world. The rulers of this world did not know it. God revealed these things through the Spirit, because only God’s Spirit knows the things of God. The Spirit helps believers know what God has freely given.

1 Corinthians 2:6, 1 Corinthians 2:8, 1 Corinthians 2:10, 1 Corinthians 2:11, 1 Corinthians 2:12, 1 Corinthians 2:13

4

Make and respond: Reminder card for wise faith

8 min

Children choose one short phrase from the passage, such as ‘Jesus Christ and him crucified’, ‘the power of God’, or ‘we have Christ’s mind’. They write it on a card and draw a simple symbol to help them remember. Briefly discuss a real example, such as hearing confident opinions and needing to remember where true wisdom comes from.

1 Corinthians 2:2, 1 Corinthians 2:5, 1 Corinthians 2:16

5

Closing: Spiritual understanding and prayer

4 min

Read verses 14 to 16. Explain simply that God’s things are spiritually discerned, so understanding them depends on God’s Spirit, not only natural thinking. Finish by reviewing the lesson goal together: Paul preached Christ, and believers depend on the Spirit to know God’s wisdom. Invite the class to say their chosen verse aloud.

1 Corinthians 2:14, 1 Corinthians 2:15, 1 Corinthians 2:16

Questions to explore

Why did Paul say he decided to know nothing among them except Jesus Christ and him crucified?

Look at how Paul contrasts his message with excellence of speech and then links it to faith standing in God’s power rather than human wisdom.

1 Corinthians 2:1, 1 Corinthians 2:2, 1 Corinthians 2:5

What does this passage say the Spirit does for God’s people?

Notice the verbs in the passage: the Spirit reveals, searches, and helps believers know the things freely given by God.

1 Corinthians 2:10, 1 Corinthians 2:11, 1 Corinthians 2:12

What is the difference between human wisdom and the wisdom Paul speaks about?

Compare the wisdom of this world and its rulers with God’s wisdom in a mystery, revealed through the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:6, 1 Corinthians 2:7, 1 Corinthians 2:8, 1 Corinthians 2:13

Key Verse Reminder Card

What you’ll need

  • card or paper
  • pencils or pens
  • crayons or markers
  • Bible

Try it together

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 2:2, 1 Corinthians 2:5, and 1 Corinthians 2:16 together.
  2. Let each child choose one phrase from one of those verses to copy onto a small card.
  3. Ask them to draw a simple picture or symbol that matches the phrase, such as a cross, a heart, or a light bulb.
  4. Invite each child to explain how their card connects to Paul’s teaching in this passage.

This activity helps children remember that Paul centred his message on Christ, pointed people to God’s power, and taught that believers have Christ’s mind.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, offer two verse choices only and let them trace a short phrase instead of writing a whole sentence.
  • For older or stronger readers, ask them to compare 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 with 1 Corinthians 2:12-13 and explain how both parts mention dependence on the Spirit rather than human wisdom.

An optional closing prayer

‘God, thank you for sending Jesus Christ. Please help us trust your power rather than human wisdom, and help us learn from your Spirit. Amen.’

1 Corinthians 2

1 When I came to you, brothers, I didn’t come with excellence of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God.

2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

3 I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling.

4 My speech and my preaching were not in persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,

5 that your faith wouldn’t stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

6 We speak wisdom, however, among those who are full grown, yet a wisdom not of this world nor of the rulers of this world who are coming to nothing.

7 But we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom that has been hidden, which God foreordained before the worlds for our glory,

8 which none of the rulers of this world has known. For had they known it, they wouldn’t have crucified the Lord of glory.

9 But as it is written, “Things which an eye didn’t see, and an ear didn’t hear, which didn’t enter into the heart of man, these God has prepared for those who love him.”

10 But to us, God revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

11 For who among men knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so, no one knows the things of God except God’s Spirit.

12 But we received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might know the things that were freely given to us by God.

13 We also speak these things, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual things.

14 Now the natural man doesn’t receive the things of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to him; and he can’t know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

15 But he who is spiritual discerns all things, and he himself is to be judged by no one.

16 “For who has known the mind of the Lord that he should instruct him?” But we have Christ’s mind.
