1 John 1: The Word of Life

1 John 1:1–4; 1 John 1:5–10

This lesson helps children see two linked ideas in 1 John 1: Jesus is truly revealed as the Word of life, and people who belong with God are called to walk in the light by telling the truth about sin.

6–10 years30 minutes

Before you teach

In 1 John 1:1–4, the writer says he and others heard, saw and touched the Word of life, and they declare this so others may share fellowship with them, the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. In 1 John 1:5–10, he announces the message that God is light and contrasts truthfulness with claims that deny sin.

Learning aim

Students will be able to state that 1 John 1 teaches that Jesus was truly revealed, God is light, and walking in the light includes honest confession of sin.

1

Welcome: Hear the big idea

4 min

Begin by introducing two phrases from the passage: “the Word of life” and “walk in the light”. Tell the group they will listen for what the writer says he personally witnessed about the life revealed, and what he says is true about God. This gives children a clear listening task before reading.

1 John 1:1, 1 John 1:2, 1 John 1:5

2

Read and explain: The life was revealed

7 min

Read 1 John 1:1–4 aloud. Explain that the writer repeats heard, seen and touched to show he is declaring someone truly revealed, not an imaginary idea. Point out that “the Word of life” is linked with “the eternal life” and with “his Son, Jesus Christ”. The purpose given is fellowship and fulfilled joy.

1 John 1:1, 1 John 1:2, 1 John 1:3, 1 John 1:4

3

Discuss: God is light

7 min

Read 1 John 1:5–10. Explain that the passage says God is light and has no darkness at all. Then notice the repeated “if we say”. The writer compares words and actions: claiming fellowship while walking in darkness is false, but walking in the light includes fellowship, cleansing, confession, forgiveness and truth.

1 John 1:5, 1 John 1:6, 1 John 1:7, 1 John 1:8, 1 John 1:9, 1 John 1:10

4

Make and respond: Reminder card

8 min

Children choose one key verse or phrase from the passage and make a small reminder card. Invite them to write a realistic example such as telling the truth after doing wrong, then connect it to the text by discussing why confession fits walking in the light. Keep examples ordinary and age-appropriate.

1 John 1:5, 1 John 1:7, 1 John 1:9

5

Closing: Say the lesson back

4 min

Finish by asking children to say the message in their own words: Jesus was truly revealed, God is light, and we should be truthful about sin. Re-read one or two verses together and remind them that the passage joins fellowship with truthfulness before God and with one another.

1 John 1:3, 1 John 1:5, 1 John 1:7, 1 John 1:9

Questions to explore

Why does the writer keep saying he and others heard, saw and touched the Word of life?

Look at the repeated words in 1 John 1:1–3 and notice that he says they declare what they have seen and heard to others.

1 John 1:1, 1 John 1:2, 1 John 1:3

What does the passage say is wrong with claiming fellowship with God while walking in darkness?

Use the exact contrast in 1 John 1:6–7 between saying something and walking in a different way.

1 John 1:6, 1 John 1:7

According to this passage, what should a person do instead of saying they have no sin?

Compare 1 John 1:8 and 1 John 1:10 with 1 John 1:9 to find the truthful response the writer teaches.

Walk in the Light Reminder Card

What you’ll need

  • card or paper
  • pencils or pens
  • crayons or markers
  • Bible

Try it together

  1. Read 1 John 1:5–10 again and let each child choose a short phrase such as “God is light” or “If we confess our sins”.
  2. Fold a small piece of card and write the chosen phrase on the front.
  3. Inside, write or draw one realistic way to respond, such as telling the truth after doing wrong or asking God for forgiveness.
  4. Invite each child to show the card and explain how their phrase connects to walking in the light.

The card helps children remember that this passage joins God’s light with truthful living, confession and fellowship.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, offer two verse choices only and let them draw a picture instead of writing a full example.
  • For older or more confident children, ask them to compare the repeated “if we say” statements and sort them into false claims and truthful responses.

An optional closing prayer

“Father, thank you for revealing your Son. Please help us walk in the light, tell the truth about our sin, and trust your forgiveness through Jesus.”

1 John 1

1 That which was from the beginning, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we saw, and our hands touched, concerning the Word of life

2 (and the life was revealed, and we have seen, and testify, and declare to you the life, the eternal life, which was with the Father, and was revealed to us);

3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us. Yes, and our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

4 And we write these things to you, that our joy may be fulfilled.

5 This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

6 If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie and don’t tell the truth.

7 But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we haven’t sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
