Before you teach

In 1 Thessalonians 3, the writer says that when they could not stand it any longer, they sent Timothy to establish and comfort the believers concerning their faith during afflictions. Then Timothy returned with glad news of their faith and love, leading to comfort, thanksgiving and prayer.

Learning aim

Students will be able to explain why Timothy was sent, describe the report he brought back, and name one way this passage encourages steady faith, love and prayer.

1

Welcome: Checking on people you care about

4 min

Introduce the idea of checking how someone is going when life is hard. Explain that in this passage, Timothy was sent to help and encourage believers. Ask children to listen for two things as you read: why Timothy was sent, and what happened when he came back with news.

1 Thessalonians 3:2, 1 Thessalonians 3:5, 1 Thessalonians 3:6

2

Read and explain: Why Timothy was sent

8 min

Read 1 Thessalonians 3:1-5 aloud. Explain that Timothy is called a brother and God’s servant in the Good News of Christ. He was sent to establish and comfort them concerning their faith. The passage says afflictions were expected, and the writer wanted to know their faith because of concern that the tempter had tempted them.

1 Thessalonians 3:1, 1 Thessalonians 3:2, 1 Thessalonians 3:3, 1 Thessalonians 3:4, 1 Thessalonians 3:5

3

Discuss: What Timothy’s report meant

6 min

Read 1 Thessalonians 3:6-8. Ask children to notice the words faith, love, comfort and stand fast. Timothy’s report was glad news because the believers had faith and love, remembered them well, and longed to see them. Their steady faith brought comfort in distress and affliction.

1 Thessalonians 3:6, 1 Thessalonians 3:7, 1 Thessalonians 3:8

4

Make and respond: Reminder card for faith and love

8 min

Choose one key line from the passage such as stand fast in the Lord, increase and abound in love, or establish your hearts. Children make a small reminder card with the verse reference and a simple drawing. Discuss one realistic example, such as encouraging a friend or praying when life feels hard.

1 Thessalonians 3:8, 1 Thessalonians 3:12, 1 Thessalonians 3:13

5

Closing: Thanksgiving and prayer

4 min

Read 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13. Point out that the writer gives thanks to God, prays night and day, asks that the way may be directed to them, and prays for growth in love and hearts established blameless in holiness. Finish by reviewing the lesson in three words: sent, encouraged, prayed.

1 Thessalonians 3:9, 1 Thessalonians 3:10, 1 Thessalonians 3:11, 1 Thessalonians 3:12, 1 Thessalonians 3:13

Faith and Love Reminder Card

What you’ll need

  • card or paper
  • pencils or pens
  • coloured pencils or markers
  • scissors

Try it together

  1. Read 1 Thessalonians 3:8, 1 Thessalonians 3:12 and 1 Thessalonians 3:13, then let each child choose one verse reference for their card.
  2. Fold or cut the paper into a small card and write a short phrase from the chosen verse with its reference.
  3. Add a simple drawing that matches the verse, such as joined hands for love or a sturdy tree for standing fast.
  4. On the back, write one practical response such as pray for someone, encourage someone, or remember to keep trusting the Lord.
  5. Invite children to share their card and explain how it connects to the passage.

The card helps children remember that this passage joins steady faith, growing love and prayerful encouragement together.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, pre-write two or three short verse choices on a board and let them copy one with a simple drawing.
  • For older or stronger readers, ask them to compare 1 Thessalonians 3:2 with 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13 and explain how encouragement, love and holiness fit together in the passage.

An optional closing prayer

Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for the encouragement in this passage. Please help us stand fast in the Lord, grow in love toward one another, and remember to pray for others. Amen.

1 Thessalonians 3

1 Therefore when we couldn’t stand it any longer, we thought it good to be left behind at Athens alone,

2 and sent Timothy, our brother and God’s servant in the Good News of Christ, to establish you and to comfort you concerning your faith,

3 that no one would be moved by these afflictions. For you know that we are appointed to this task.

4 For most certainly, when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we are to suffer affliction, even as it happened, and you know.

5 For this cause I also, when I couldn’t stand it any longer, sent that I might know your faith, for fear that by any means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor would have been in vain.

6 But Timothy has just now come to us from you, and brought us glad news of your faith and love, and that you have good memories of us always, longing to see us, even as we also long to see you.

7 For this cause, brothers, we were comforted over you in all our distress and affliction through your faith.

8 For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord.

9 For what thanksgiving can we give again to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sakes before our God,

10 night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face and may perfect that which is lacking in your faith?

11 Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you.

12 May the Lord make you to increase and abound in love toward one another and toward all men, even as we also do toward you,

13 to the end he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.
