Single lesson
1 Timothy 2: A Call to Prayer
1 Timothy 2:1–8; 1 Timothy 2:9–15
This lesson helps students follow the flow of 1 Timothy 2 carefully. It begins with prayer for all people, gives reasons centred on God and Christ Jesus, names the writer’s own calling, and then turns to conduct, learning and godliness.
Before you teach
In 1 Timothy 2, the writer urges petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanks for all people, including kings and others in high places. He says this is good before God our Saviour, speaks about Christ Jesus as the one mediator, identifies himself as a preacher, apostle and teacher of the Gentiles, and then gives instructions about men and women.
Students will be able to trace the movement of 1 Timothy 2:1-15, identify the writer’s first-person claim in verse 7, and describe the main instructions and reasons in the passage with verse support.
Welcome: track the chapter’s movement
5 minWrite three headings for students to watch for as they listen: “Prayer for all”, “Why this matters”, and “Conduct in every place”. Explain that they are tracing one passage in order. Ask them to notice repeated words and phrases such as all, truth, pray, quietness, godliness, faith, love and holiness.
1 Timothy 2:1, 1 Timothy 2:4, 1 Timothy 2:8, 1 Timothy 2:11, 1 Timothy 2:15
Read and explain: prayer for all and the reasons given
10 minRead verses 1-6 aloud. Point out the four prayer words in verse 1 and the specific group in verse 2, “kings and all who are in high places”. Then trace the reasons in order: this is good before God our Saviour, God desires people to be saved and know the truth, and Christ Jesus is the one mediator who gave himself as a ransom for all.
1 Timothy 2:1, 1 Timothy 2:2, 1 Timothy 2:3, 1 Timothy 2:4, 1 Timothy 2:5, 1 Timothy 2:6
Discuss: the writer’s calling and men’s prayer
8 minRead verses 7-8 and ask, “Who is speaking in the first person?” Students should identify that the writer says, “I was appointed a preacher and an apostle ... a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.” Then note the next instruction: men in every place are to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting.
1 Timothy 2:7, 1 Timothy 2:8
Read and discuss: women, good works, and the reasons named
10 minRead verses 9-15 carefully. List what the passage says directly: decent clothing, modesty, propriety, good works, learning in quietness, and verse 12’s statement about teaching and authority. Then include the reasons given in verses 13-14 from Adam and Eve. Note verse 15 honestly as difficult: it says, “she will be saved through her childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness with sobriety.” Students should quote it accurately and observe its words without forcing a simple answer.
1 Timothy 2:9, 1 Timothy 2:10, 1 Timothy 2:11, 1 Timothy 2:12, 1 Timothy 2:13, 1 Timothy 2:14, 1 Timothy 2:15
Make and respond: two-panel verse map
7 minStudents make a folded card with two inside panels. On one side, write who should be prayed for and why. On the other, write words and instructions from verses 8-15 about conduct and godliness. Finish by asking students to give one sentence on how the chapter moves from prayer to behaviour.
1 Timothy 2:1, 1 Timothy 2:2, 1 Timothy 2:8, 1 Timothy 2:10, 1 Timothy 2:15
Questions to explore
According to 1 Timothy 2:1-2, who should be included in prayer, and what result is named when praying for rulers?
Look for the repeated word “all” and the purpose statement about leading “a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence”.
1 Timothy 2:1, 1 Timothy 2:2
What does the writer say about himself in 1 Timothy 2:7, and how does that fit after verses 3-6?
Quote verse 7 carefully, then connect it to the truth about God, Christ Jesus, and the ransom for all named just before it.
1 Timothy 2:5, 1 Timothy 2:6, 1 Timothy 2:7
In 1 Timothy 2:9-15, what instructions are given, what reasons are stated in verses 13-14, and what exact difficult wording appears in verse 15?
Separate commands from reasons, then read verse 15 word for word so you do not skip its hard phrase about being “saved through her childbearing”.
1 Timothy 2:9, 1 Timothy 2:10, 1 Timothy 2:11, 1 Timothy 2:12, 1 Timothy 2:13, 1 Timothy 2:14, 1 Timothy 2:15

Two-Panel Verse-Map Card
What you’ll need
- paper or card
- pens or pencils
- coloured pencils or markers
- Bible text
Try it together
- Fold a sheet of paper in half to make two inside panels.
- Label one panel “Pray for all” and copy people or groups named in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, plus the reason given there.
- Label the other panel “Conduct and godliness” and copy key words or phrases from 1 Timothy 2:8-15.
- Underline the sentence in 1 Timothy 2:7 about the writer being a preacher, apostle and teacher, and add it on the back.
- Write one short closing prayer using words from 1 Timothy 2:1-4.
This activity helps students see the chapter’s movement from prayer for all people, to the writer’s calling, to instructions about conduct and godliness.
Adapt for your group
- For younger or less confident readers, pre-write the headings and give them a short list of verse words to copy exactly, such as all, truth, pray, good works, faith and love.
- For stronger students, ask them to colour-code commands, reasons and first-person statements, then explain how verses 13-15 function in the argument.
An optional closing prayer
“God our Saviour, please help us pray for all people, love the truth, and live with faith, love, holiness and reverence through Christ Jesus. Amen.”

1 Timothy 2
1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks be made for all men,
2 for kings and all who are in high places, that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
4 who desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth.
5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, the testimony at the proper time,
7 to which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am telling the truth in Christ, not lying—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
8 I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting.
9 In the same way, that women also adorn themselves in decent clothing, with modesty and propriety, not with braided hair, gold, pearls, or expensive clothing,
10 but with good works, which is appropriate for women professing godliness.
11 Let a woman learn in quietness with full submission.
12 But I don’t permit a woman to teach, nor to exercise authority over a man, but to be in quietness.
13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.
14 Adam wasn’t deceived, but the woman, being deceived, has fallen into disobedience;
15 but she will be saved through her childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness with sobriety.
