1 Timothy 4: A Warning against Apostasy

1 Timothy 4:1–5; 1 Timothy 4:6–16

This lesson helps children see two linked parts in 1 Timothy 4. First, the passage warns about false teaching. Then it shows what steady teaching and godly living should look like for someone serving Christ Jesus.

Before you teach

These verses begin with a clear warning from the Spirit that some will fall away from the faith and follow deceptive teaching. The passage then tells Timothy to instruct believers, aim at godliness, be an example in daily life, and watch both himself and his teaching carefully.

Learning aim

Students will be able to identify the warning about false teaching in 1 Timothy 4:1–5 and name at least three instructions Timothy is given in 1 Timothy 4:6–16.

1

Welcome: Spot the two big ideas

4 min

Say that today’s reading has two connected parts. In the first part, the Spirit warns that some will fall away from the faith and listen to false teaching. In the second part, Timothy is told how to be a good servant of Christ Jesus by teaching truth and living in a godly way. Read the whole passage aloud once.

1 Timothy 4:1, 1 Timothy 4:6, 1 Timothy 4:7, 1 Timothy 4:11

2

Read and explain: Warning and thanksgiving

7 min

Read verses 1 to 5 again. Help children notice the warning words: ‘fall away’, ‘seducing spirits’, ‘doctrines of demons’, and ‘speak lies’. Then point to the example these verses give: some were forbidding marriage and commanding people to abstain from foods. The passage says every creature of God is good if it is received with thanksgiving, and it says it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer.

1 Timothy 4:1, 1 Timothy 4:2, 1 Timothy 4:3, 1 Timothy 4:4, 1 Timothy 4:5

3

Discuss: What does a good servant do?

6 min

Read verses 6 to 10. Explain that Timothy is to instruct believers in these things and so be a good servant of Christ Jesus. He is to refuse empty stories and exercise himself toward godliness. Bodily exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things. Verse 9 says, ‘This saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance’. Verse 10 adds that they labour and suffer reproach because they have set their trust in the living God, ‘who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe’.

1 Timothy 4:6, 1 Timothy 4:7, 1 Timothy 4:8, 1 Timothy 4:9, 1 Timothy 4:10

4

Make and respond: Example, reading, diligence

8 min

Read verses 11 to 16. Ask children to list the actions Timothy is told to take: command and teach, be an example, pay attention to reading, exhortation and teaching, do not neglect the gift, be diligent, and pay attention to yourself and your teaching. Explain that these verses care about both truthful words and a faithful way of life.

1 Timothy 4:11, 1 Timothy 4:12, 1 Timothy 4:13, 1 Timothy 4:14, 1 Timothy 4:15, 1 Timothy 4:16

5

Closing: Choose one truth to remember

5 min

Invite each child to say one sentence from the passage that they want to remember, such as receiving God’s gifts with thanksgiving or exercising toward godliness. Review that the chapter warns against leaving the faith and calls Timothy to continue in careful teaching and example. Finish by sharing the takeaway together.

1 Timothy 4:4, 1 Timothy 4:7, 1 Timothy 4:12, 1 Timothy 4:16

Questions to explore

What are some of the warning signs of false teaching in verses 1 to 3?

Look for the phrases about falling away, lies, and rules about marriage and foods, and answer with the words the passage uses.

1 Timothy 4:1, 1 Timothy 4:2, 1 Timothy 4:3

How do verses 4 and 5 answer the teaching that certain foods must be avoided?

Use the text carefully: verse 4 says every creature of God is good and is to be received with thanksgiving, and verse 5 says it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer.

1 Timothy 4:4, 1 Timothy 4:5

Which instructions in verses 11 to 16 show that Timothy’s life and teaching both matter?

Find actions about being an example, reading and teaching, diligence, and paying attention to himself and his teaching.

1 Timothy 4:11, 1 Timothy 4:12, 1 Timothy 4:13, 1 Timothy 4:15, 1 Timothy 4:16

Key Verse Reminder Card

What you’ll need

  • paper or card
  • pencils or pens
  • colours or markers
  • Bible text to copy from

Try it together

  1. Ask each child to choose one key verse or short phrase from 1 Timothy 4 that they can read and understand.
  2. Write the chosen words neatly on a small card and add one drawing or symbol that matches the verse, such as praying hands for thanksgiving or footprints for godliness.
  3. On the back, write one simple action linked to the verse, such as ‘say thank you to God’ or ‘be an example in words’.
  4. Let children share their cards and explain why they chose that part of the passage.

This activity helps children focus on the chapter’s main teaching by linking one exact verse to a practical response drawn from the passage.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, offer two or three short verse choices such as parts of 1 Timothy 4:4, 1 Timothy 4:7, or 1 Timothy 4:12, and let them draw more than they write.
  • For stronger readers, ask them to sort Timothy’s instructions into two groups from the text: teaching actions and example-of-life actions.

An optional closing prayer

‘Dear God, please help us receive your gifts with thanksgiving, refuse what is false, and grow in godliness, in our words and in our way of life. Amen.’

1 Timothy 4

1 But the Spirit says expressly that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons,

2 through the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron,

3 forbidding marriage and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.

5 For it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer.

6 If you instruct the brothers of these things, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine which you have followed.

7 But refuse profane and old wives’ fables. Exercise yourself toward godliness.

8 For bodily exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things, having the promise of the life which is now and of that which is to come.

9 This saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance.

10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we have set our trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.

11 Command and teach these things.

12 Let no man despise your youth; but be an example to those who believe, in word, in your way of life, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity.

13 Until I come, pay attention to reading, to exhortation, and to teaching.

14 Don’t neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the elders.

15 Be diligent in these things. Give yourself wholly to them, that your progress may be revealed to all.

16 Pay attention to yourself and to your teaching. Continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
