1 Timothy 6: Serving with Honor
1 Timothy 6:1–2; 1 Timothy 6:3–5; 1 Timothy 6:6–10; 1 Timothy 6:11–16; 1 Timothy 6:17–19; 1 Timothy 6:20–21
This three-session plan helps children read 1 Timothy 6 in order. They will notice how the chapter links honour, sound teaching, contentment, faithful living, generosity and guarding what has been entrusted.
Before you teach
In 1 Timothy 6, Timothy receives a series of direct instructions. The passage begins with honour and service, warns about different teaching and quarrels, contrasts contentment with greed, calls for godly perseverance, instructs the rich to hope in God, and ends by telling Timothy to guard what was committed to him.
Students will identify the main instruction in each reading unit of 1 Timothy 6 and explain one response that matches the verses studied.
Your lesson sequence
Use the teaching outline below for each session, with these reading and activity choices.
Honour and reject quarrelsome teaching
1 Timothy 6:1–5
Children identify the call to honour and serve in verses 1–2, then observe the warning against different doctrine, arguments and treating godliness as gain.
Try together: List the commands and reasons in the passage, then say one careful application that fits the reading.
Be content and fight the good fight
1 Timothy 6:6–16
Children trace the contrast between contentment and greed, then the call to flee these things, pursue godly qualities, fight the good fight of faith, and keep the commandment.
Try together: Sort the verses into warnings and commands, then make a card for one key instruction.
Hope in God and guard what was entrusted
1 Timothy 6:17–21
Children see that the rich must hope in the living God, do good and share, and that Timothy must guard what was committed to him and turn away from false knowledge.
Try together: Name where hope should be placed and choose one closing charge to remember this week.
Welcome: Track the commands in 1 Timothy 6
4 minBriefly introduce today’s reading unit and tell children to listen for commands and reasons. Explain that each session stays with its own verses, so the class learns to find the teaching in the passage itself rather than guessing from memory.
1 Timothy 6:2, 1 Timothy 6:5, 1 Timothy 6:11, 1 Timothy 6:18, 1 Timothy 6:20
Read and explain: Honour, contentment, hope and guarding
8 minRead the day’s verses aloud. Explain important words from that unit, such as honour, contentment, rich in good works, or guard. When the text speaks about bondservants and masters, note that this is the passage’s setting before suggesting a careful present-day application.
1 Timothy 6:1, 1 Timothy 6:6, 1 Timothy 6:18, 1 Timothy 6:20
Discuss: Match each instruction with its reason
6 minAsk children to find an instruction and the nearby reason for it. Examples include honouring so God’s name and teaching are not spoken against, being content because we bring nothing in and carry nothing out, and hoping in God rather than uncertain riches.
1 Timothy 6:1, 1 Timothy 6:7, 1 Timothy 6:17
Make and respond: Create a verse reminder card
8 minChildren choose one short line from the day’s reading, copy it onto card, and add a simple symbol that fits the verse. Invite each child to explain how their chosen words show the main teaching of that reading.
1 Timothy 6:6, 1 Timothy 6:12, 1 Timothy 6:18, 1 Timothy 6:20
Closing: Say the day’s charge aloud
4 minFinish by saying the day’s main instruction together in one sentence. Encourage children to name one fitting response from the text, such as showing honour, being content, doing good, sharing, or turning away from empty chatter.
1 Timothy 6:2, 1 Timothy 6:8, 1 Timothy 6:18, 1 Timothy 6:20
Questions to explore
In 1 Timothy 6:1–2, what reasons are given for showing honour and serving well?
Look for the stated reasons in the verses: God’s name and the teaching should not be blasphemed, and believing masters are called believing and beloved.
1 Timothy 6:1, 1 Timothy 6:2
What does 1 Timothy 6:6–10 call great gain, and what danger does it warn about?
Compare the words about godliness with contentment to the warnings about wanting to be rich and the love of money.
1 Timothy 6:6, 1 Timothy 6:9, 1 Timothy 6:10
According to the end of the chapter, where should hope be placed, and what must Timothy guard?
Read the charge to the rich about hoping in the living God, then the closing instruction to guard what was committed to Timothy.
1 Timothy 6:17, 1 Timothy 6:20
Make, think or respond
1 Timothy 6 Reminder Card
What you’ll need

Try it together
- Read the day’s verses and choose one short phrase from them.

Adapt for your group
- For younger children, offer two short verse choices and let them copy only a few words.
- For older children, ask them to add the verse reference and write the reason given in the passage.
An optional closing prayer

1 Timothy 6
1 Let as many as are bondservants under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, that the name of God and the doctrine not be blasphemed.
2 Those who have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brothers, but rather let them serve them, because those who partake of the benefit are believing and beloved. Teach and exhort these things.
3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and doesn’t consent to sound words, the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness,
4 he is conceited, knowing nothing, but obsessed with arguments, disputes, and word battles, from which come envy, strife, insulting, evil suspicions,
5 constant friction of people of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. Withdraw yourself from such.
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we certainly can’t carry anything out.
8 But having food and clothing, we will be content with that.
9 But those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation, a snare, and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as drown men in ruin and destruction.
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
11 But you, man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.
12 Fight the good fight of faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you confessed the good confession in the sight of many witnesses.
13 I command you before God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who before Pontius Pilate testified the good confession,
14 that you keep the commandment without spot, blameless until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 which at the right time he will show, who is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords.
16 He alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen nor can see, to whom be honor and eternal power. Amen.
17 Charge those who are rich in this present age that they not be arrogant, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy;
18 that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be ready to distribute, willing to share;
19 laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold of eternal life.
20 Timothy, guard that which is committed to you, turning away from the empty chatter and oppositions of what is falsely called knowledge,
21 which some profess, and thus have wandered from the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.
