2 Timothy 2: Grace and Perseverance

2 Timothy 2:1–13; 2 Timothy 2:14–26

This lesson helps children explore two linked parts of 2 Timothy 2: finding strength to keep going, and using words in ways that fit the Lord’s truth. Students will hear the passage, notice its pictures, and make one practical response.

6–10 years30 minutes

Before you teach

In these verses, Timothy is told to be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, to pass on what he has heard, and to endure hardship. The passage then turns to arguments, truth, godly conduct, and the gentle, patient way the Lord’s servant should correct others.

Learning aim

Students will be able to identify two main instructions in 2 Timothy 2 and give one practical way to persevere and one practical way to handle the word of truth carefully.

1

Welcome: Listen for the instructions

4 min

Introduce the lesson by telling children this passage gives many clear instructions. Ask them to listen for action words such as endure, remember, remind, shun, flee, pursue and be gentle. Explain that Timothy is told to be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and that the lesson will trace what that looks like in these verses.

2 Timothy 2:1, 2 Timothy 2:3, 2 Timothy 2:8, 2 Timothy 2:14, 2 Timothy 2:16, 2 Timothy 2:22, 2 Timothy 2:24

2

Read and explain: Soldier, athlete, farmer

8 min

Read 2 Timothy 2:1–13 aloud. Walk through the three pictures in order. The soldier avoids getting entangled so he may please the one who enrolled him. The athlete must compete by the rules. The farmer labours and then shares in the crops. Invite children to consider how each picture shows focus, effort and endurance.

2 Timothy 2:1, 2 Timothy 2:3, 2 Timothy 2:4, 2 Timothy 2:5, 2 Timothy 2:6, 2 Timothy 2:7

3

Discuss: Remember Jesus Christ

6 min

Stay in 2 Timothy 2:8–13 and point out that one key instruction in this section is, “Remember Jesus Christ”. The passage says Jesus Christ is risen from the dead and of the offspring of David. It also says the writer suffers hardship and chains, yet God’s word is not chained. Then read the trustworthy saying about dying, living, enduring and faithfulness.

2 Timothy 2:8, 2 Timothy 2:9, 2 Timothy 2:10, 2 Timothy 2:11, 2 Timothy 2:12, 2 Timothy 2:13

4

Make and respond: Approved work and helpful words

8 min

Read 2 Timothy 2:14–26 aloud. Help the group compare harmful talk with faithful speech. Some arguments are to no profit and can overthrow faith, while the approved workman properly handles the word of truth. The Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but should be gentle, patient and able to teach. Children then make a reminder card from one verse or phrase.

2 Timothy 2:14, 2 Timothy 2:15, 2 Timothy 2:18, 2 Timothy 2:23, 2 Timothy 2:24, 2 Timothy 2:25

5

Closing: Truth and character together

4 min

Review by asking children to complete two prompts: “One instruction about perseverance is...” and “One instruction about words or behaviour is...” Read verse 15 or verse 24 again. Remind them that this passage joins careful handling of truth with righteous, peaceful and gentle conduct.

2 Timothy 2:15, 2 Timothy 2:22, 2 Timothy 2:24, 2 Timothy 2:25

Questions to explore

What do the pictures of a soldier, an athlete and a farmer each show in this passage?

Look closely at what each one does: the soldier avoids entanglements, the athlete competes by the rules, and the farmer labours before sharing in the crops.

2 Timothy 2:3, 2 Timothy 2:4, 2 Timothy 2:5, 2 Timothy 2:6

What does the passage tell Timothy to remember?

The exact instruction is to remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the offspring of David; nearby verses also mention chains and say God’s word is not chained.

2 Timothy 2:8, 2 Timothy 2:9

How should the Lord’s servant deal with people who oppose the truth?

The passage says the Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but should be gentle toward all, able to teach, patient, and correcting in gentleness.

2 Timothy 2:24, 2 Timothy 2:25, 2 Timothy 2:26

Key Verse Reminder Card

What you’ll need

  • card or paper
  • pencils or pens
  • coloured pencils or markers
  • Bible text written where children can see it

Try it together

  1. Ask each child to choose one verse or short phrase from 2 Timothy 2 that they want to remember.
  2. Have them copy the words neatly onto a small card and decorate it with a simple symbol that matches the verse, such as running shoes, a lamp, or a heart.
  3. Under the verse, ask them to write or draw one real-life example of when they could follow this instruction.
  4. Invite volunteers to show their card and explain how their chosen words connect to the passage.

This activity helps children focus on one instruction from 2 Timothy 2 and connect it to perseverance, careful speech, truthful teaching, or gentle character.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, offer three short verse choices to copy, such as part of 2 Timothy 2:1, 2 Timothy 2:8 or 2 Timothy 2:24, and let them draw instead of writing a full example.
  • For stronger readers, ask them to pair one instruction from 2 Timothy 2:1–13 with one instruction from 2 Timothy 2:14–26 and explain how both shape the Lord’s servant.

An optional closing prayer

“Lord, please strengthen us in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Help us remember Jesus Christ and teach us to speak and act with truth, patience and gentleness. Amen.”

2 Timothy 2

1 You therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2 The things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same things to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

3 You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

4 No soldier on duty entangles himself in the affairs of life, that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier.

5 Also, if anyone competes in athletics, he isn’t crowned unless he has competed by the rules.

6 The farmer who labors must be the first to get a share of the crops.

7 Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things.

8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the offspring of David, according to my Good News,

9 in which I suffer hardship to the point of chains as a criminal. But God’s word isn’t chained.

10 Therefore I endure all things for the chosen ones’ sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

11 This saying is trustworthy: “For if we died with him, we will also live with him.

12 If we endure, we will also reign with him. If we deny him, he also will deny us.

13 If we are faithless, he remains faithful; for he can’t deny himself.”

14 Remind them of these things, charging them in the sight of the Lord that they don’t argue about words to no profit, to the subverting of those who hear.

15 Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth.

16 But shun empty chatter, for it will go further in ungodliness,

17 and those words will consume like gangrene, of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus:

18 men who have erred concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past, and overthrowing the faith of some.

19 However, God’s firm foundation stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.”

20 Now in a large house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of clay. Some are for honor and some for dishonor.

21 If anyone therefore purges himself from these, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, and suitable for the master’s use, prepared for every good work.

22 Flee from youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

23 But refuse foolish and ignorant questionings, knowing that they generate strife.

24 The Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but be gentle toward all, able to teach, patient,

25 in gentleness correcting those who oppose him. Perhaps God may give them repentance leading to a full knowledge of the truth,

26 and they may recover themselves out of the devil’s snare, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
