Before you teach

These verses move through four connected parts of the chapter. Paul first commands Timothy to preach the word and keep going faithfully. He then asks Timothy to come soon and names several people. Next he says that people left him, yet the Lord stood by him. Finally, he sends greetings and a short blessing.

Learning aim

Students will be able to identify Paul’s main charge in 2 Timothy 4, describe how the rest of the chapter supports it, and name one practical response from the passage.

Your lesson sequence

Use the teaching outline below for each session, with these reading and activity choices.

Session 1

Preach the word

2 Timothy 4:1–8

Paul gives Timothy a serious charge to preach the word, remain steady when people turn from truth, and fulfil his ministry faithfully.

Try together: Students identify the main command in the passage and explain why Paul says Timothy must continue patiently and faithfully.

Session 2

Personal concerns in ministry

2 Timothy 4:9–15

Paul’s personal requests and warnings show that ministry includes ordinary needs, helpful people, painful departures and real opposition.

Try together: Students list the people and items Paul mentions, then describe how these details fit a life of faithful service.

Session 3

The Lord remained faithful

2 Timothy 4:16–18

Paul says others left him, yet the Lord stood by him, strengthened him, and would preserve him for his heavenly Kingdom.

Try together: Students compare what people did with what the Lord did, then state one truth this teaches about the Lord’s help.

Session 4

Final greetings and grace

2 Timothy 4:19–22

Paul ends with greetings, travel notes, urgency about coming before winter, and a closing blessing centred on the Lord Jesus Christ and grace.

Try together: Students identify the kinds of details in the closing verses and explain how this ending still fits the chapter’s message of faithful Christian life.

1

Welcome: A serious charge

4 min

Begin by telling students that today’s passage includes both a strong instruction and everyday details. Ask them to listen for what Timothy is told to do, what makes that instruction urgent, and how Paul keeps talking about faithfulness even while facing hardship. Write the words preach, patient, hardship and faithful where everyone can see them.

2 Timothy 4:1, 2 Timothy 4:2, 2 Timothy 4:5, 2 Timothy 4:7

2

Read and explain: Preach the word

8 min

Read 2 Timothy 4:1-8 aloud. Explain that Paul gives this command before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, so it is weighty. “Preach the word” is followed by actions such as reprove, rebuke and exhort, and these must be done with patience and teaching. Paul also says some people turn from truth to fables, so Timothy must stay sober and fulfil his ministry.

2 Timothy 4:1, 2 Timothy 4:2, 2 Timothy 4:3, 2 Timothy 4:4, 2 Timothy 4:5

3

Discuss: Faithfulness in real life

6 min

Guide students to notice that Paul does not only give commands. He also describes his own faithfulness, saying he has fought the good fight, finished the course and kept the faith. Talk about how the chapter then shows real-life ministry needs, including travel, helpful friends, opposition and warnings. This helps children see that serving faithfully includes both speaking God’s word and handling ordinary responsibilities.

2 Timothy 4:7, 2 Timothy 4:9, 2 Timothy 4:11, 2 Timothy 4:14, 2 Timothy 4:15

4

Make and respond: Reminder card

8 min

Invite each student to choose one short phrase from the passage for a reminder card, such as “preach the word”, “be sober in all things”, or “the Lord stood by me”. Younger children can copy a phrase and draw a matching picture. Older children can add one sentence explaining how that phrase fits the chapter’s message about faithful service.

2 Timothy 4:2, 2 Timothy 4:5, 2 Timothy 4:17

5

Closing: The Lord’s help and final blessing

4 min

Finish by reading 2 Timothy 4:16-22. Point out that people failed Paul at his first defence, yet he says the Lord stood by him and strengthened him. He ends with names, greetings and a blessing. Review that the chapter joins a strong teaching command with trust in the Lord and care for real people.

2 Timothy 4:16, 2 Timothy 4:17, 2 Timothy 4:19, 2 Timothy 4:22

Questions to explore

What reasons does Paul give for Timothy to take the command seriously?

Look at who Paul speaks about in the charge, and notice what Jesus will do at his appearing and Kingdom.

2 Timothy 4:1

Which words in the chapter show that faithful ministry needs both truth and patience?

Find the command to preach, then list the actions that follow it and the manner they should be done in.

2 Timothy 4:2

How does the chapter show that the Lord’s help matters when other people fail?

Compare Paul’s words about being left alone with his words about the Lord standing by him and strengthening him.

2 Timothy 4:16, 2 Timothy 4:17, 2 Timothy 4:18

Key Verse Reminder Card

What you’ll need

  • paper or card
  • pencils or pens
  • crayons or markers
  • Bible

Try it together

  1. Read 2 Timothy 4:2, 2 Timothy 4:5 and 2 Timothy 4:17, then let each student choose one phrase.
  2. Fold a piece of paper or card in half to make a simple reminder card.
  3. Write the chosen phrase on the front and decorate it with symbols from the passage, such as a book, a path, or a shield.
  4. Inside the card, write one sentence about what the phrase teaches in this chapter.
  5. Take turns sharing the phrase and explanation with the group.

This activity helps students keep the chapter’s words in view and connect Paul’s command with faithful service and the Lord’s help.

Adapt for your group

  • For ages 6 to 7, read shorter sections aloud twice, offer two verse choices for the card, and let students explain their idea verbally instead of writing a full sentence.
  • For stronger readers, ask them to sort details from the chapter under three headings: command, hardship and help, then include one detail from each on the back of the card.

An optional closing prayer

You may pray: “Lord Jesus, please help us listen to your truth, stay faithful, and remember that you stand by your people. Give us patience, courage and grace. Amen.”

2 Timothy 4

1 I command you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his Kingdom:

2 preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort with all patience and teaching.

3 For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts,

4 and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn away to fables.

5 But you be sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry.

6 For I am already being offered, and the time of my departure has come.

7 I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith.

8 From now on, the crown of righteousness is stored up for me, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day; and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing.

9 Be diligent to come to me soon,

10 for Demas left me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia; and Titus to Dalmatia.

11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service.

12 But I sent Tychicus to Ephesus.

13 Bring the cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus when you come—and the books, especially the parchments.

14 Alexander the coppersmith did much evil to me. The Lord will repay him according to his deeds.

15 Beware of him, for he greatly opposed our words.

16 At my first defense, no one came to help me, but all left me. May it not be held against them.

17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear. So I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and will preserve me for his heavenly Kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

19 Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the house of Onesiphorus.

20 Erastus remained at Corinth, but I left Trophimus at Miletus sick.

21 Be diligent to come before winter. Eubulus salutes you, as do Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers.

22 The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.
