Baby Moses: Courage and Care

Exodus 1:1–2:10

This lesson helps children read a sad and important part of Exodus with care. They will notice the danger in Egypt and identify the people in the passage who protect Moses or show compassion toward him.

6–10 years30 minutes

Before you teach

Exodus 1:1–2:10 says the children of Israel increased greatly in Egypt. A new king feared them, made them serve harshly, and ordered baby boys to be killed. The midwives feared God and saved baby boys alive. In that setting, Moses was born, hidden, placed in a basket, found, and cared for.

Learning aim

Students will be able to name the people in Exodus 1:15–2:10 who protect Moses or care for him, and describe what each one does.

1

Welcome: A dangerous time in Egypt

5 min

Begin calmly by saying this passage starts with trouble for the children of Israel. Read that they increased greatly, then a new king feared them and treated them harshly. Explain that Pharaoh is the king of Egypt. Ask children to listen for people who protect, help, or care in this hard situation.

Exodus 1:7, Exodus 1:8, Exodus 1:11, Exodus 1:14, Exodus 1:22

2

Read and explain: The midwives feared God

6 min

Read the verses about Shiphrah and Puah. Pharaoh told the Hebrew midwives to kill baby boys, but they feared God and did not do what he commanded. Point out that these verses do not place them with Moses himself, but they do show courage and care for Hebrew baby boys in the wider setting.

Exodus 1:15, Exodus 1:16, Exodus 1:17, Exodus 1:20, Exodus 1:21

3

Discuss: Moses’ mother, sister, and Pharaoh’s daughter

7 min

Read Exodus 2:1–9 slowly. Moses’ mother hid him for three months. When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket, coated it with tar and pitch, put him in it, and laid it in the reeds. His sister watched from a distance. Pharaoh’s daughter saw the basket, opened it, heard the baby cry, and had compassion on him.

Exodus 2:2, Exodus 2:3, Exodus 2:4, Exodus 2:5, Exodus 2:6, Exodus 2:7, Exodus 2:8, Exodus 2:9

4

Make and respond: Basket of care craft

7 min

Children make a simple basket picture or paper basket. As they work, help them add the names or drawings of the helpers in order: the midwives, Moses’ mother, his sister, and Pharaoh’s daughter. Remind them to match each person with an action from the passage, not just a general idea of being kind.

Exodus 1:17, Exodus 2:3, Exodus 2:4, Exodus 2:6, Exodus 2:7, Exodus 2:9

5

Closing: Name the carers and review Moses’ name

5 min

Finish with a spoken review. Ask children to name each person and say one action from the text. Then read that the child grew, was brought to Pharaoh’s daughter, became her son, and was named Moses because she drew him out of the water. End with the takeaway for the lesson.

Exodus 2:9, Exodus 2:10

Questions to explore

Why did the midwives not do what the king of Egypt commanded?

Use the reason given in the verse itself. The passage says they feared God and did not do what the king commanded.

Exodus 1:17

What did Moses’ mother do when she could no longer hide him?

Answer with the actions named in the verse: she took a papyrus basket, coated it with tar and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds.

Exodus 2:3

What in the passage shows Pharaoh’s daughter cared for the baby?

Look for what she noticed and how she responded. The text says the baby cried and she had compassion on him.

Exodus 2:6

Make, think or respond

Basket of Care Craft

What you’ll need

  • plain or coloured paper
  • scissors
  • glue or sticky tape
  • pencils or crayons
  • small strips of paper

Try it together

  1. Fold, weave, or cut a simple basket shape from paper.
  2. Draw reeds and water near the basket to show where the child was placed.
  3. On paper strips, write or draw one action for each helper: the midwives, Moses’ mother, Moses’ sister, and Pharaoh’s daughter.
  4. Place the strips in or beside the basket and retell the actions in passage order.

The basket connects to Exodus 2:3, and the action strips help children identify exactly who protected or cared for Moses in the text.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, prepare simple basket shapes and let them match spoken actions to the correct helper.
  • For older children, ask them to sort actions under the correct person and support each choice with exact verse references.

An optional closing prayer

“God, thank you for the care shown in this passage. Please help us notice needs and act with wisdom and compassion. Amen.”

Exodus 1

1 Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt (every man and his household came with Jacob):

2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

5 All the souls who came out of Jacob’s body were seventy souls, and Joseph was in Egypt already.

6 Joseph died, as did all his brothers, and all that generation.

7 The children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.

8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who didn’t know Joseph.

9 He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we.

10 Come, let’s deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies and fight against us, and escape out of the land.”

11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.

12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They started to dread the children of Israel.

13 The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve,

14 and they made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve.

15 The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah,

16 and he said, “When you perform the duty of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

17 But the midwives feared God, and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive.

18 The king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing and saved the boys alive?”

19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”

20 God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.

21 Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.

22 Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “You shall cast every son who is born into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”

Exodus 2

1 A man of the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as his wife.

2 The woman conceived and bore a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.

3 When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket for him, and coated it with tar and with pitch. She put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.

4 His sister stood far off, to see what would be done to him.

5 Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her servant to get it.

6 She opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”

8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” The young woman went and called the child’s mother.

9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” The woman took the child, and nursed him.

10 The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”
