David at Nob and Gath

1 Samuel 21:1–15

David passes through two tense places in this story, Nob and Gath. Children will follow the order of events, notice the choices people make under pressure, and see that the passage still keeps Yahweh in view.

6–10 years30 minutes

Before you teach

The account begins when David comes alone to Ahimelech the priest at Nob. He asks for bread and then for a weapon, and receives holy bread and Goliath’s sword. A servant of Saul named Doeg is there, detained before Yahweh. Then David flees to Gath, where Achish’s servants recognise him and David becomes very afraid.

Learning aim

Students will be able to sequence 1 Samuel 21:1–15, identify choices and outcomes, and point to details in the passage that show how people respond under pressure while Yahweh is still named.

1

Welcome: Two places in one tense journey

4 min

Show two labels, ‘Nob’ and ‘Gath’. Explain that David moves from one place to the other in this reading. At Nob he meets Ahimelech the priest. At Gath he is recognised and becomes afraid. Ask the children to listen for what David asks for, who is present, and what happens next in each place.

1 Samuel 21:1, 1 Samuel 21:7, 1 Samuel 21:10, 1 Samuel 21:12

2

Read and explain: Bread, holiness, and a remembered sword

8 min

Read verses 1 to 9 slowly. Explain that Ahimelech trembles and asks why David is alone. David asks for bread, and the priest says he has no common bread, only holy bread. The text says this is the show bread taken from before Yahweh. Then David asks for a weapon and receives Goliath’s sword.

1 Samuel 21:1, 1 Samuel 21:3, 1 Samuel 21:4, 1 Samuel 21:6, 1 Samuel 21:8, 1 Samuel 21:9

3

Discuss: What the passage shows about God and people

6 min

Pause over the repeated details about Yahweh. The bread had been before Yahweh, and Doeg was detained before Yahweh. In the same story, several people act under pressure: Ahimelech trembles, David asks urgently, David flees, and David becomes very afraid. Help children see that the passage shows both human fear and God still being named.

4

Make and respond: Story sequence cards

8 min

Children make simple cards for these moments: David arrives alone, David asks for bread, holy bread is given, Goliath’s sword is given, David goes to Gath, Achish’s servants recognise David, David pretends to be insane, Achish says this fellow should not come into his house. As they order the cards, ask what choice or outcome each one shows.

1 Samuel 21:1, 1 Samuel 21:3, 1 Samuel 21:6, 1 Samuel 21:9, 1 Samuel 21:10, 1 Samuel 21:11, 1 Samuel 21:13, 1 Samuel 21:15

5

Closing: Retell and name key details

4 min

Invite children to retell the story from the cards in order. Ask them to name one thing David received at Nob, one reason fear grew in Gath, and one detail that keeps God in view in this passage. Finish by reviewing that the story shows urgent choices, clear outcomes, and repeated mention of Yahweh.

Questions to explore

Why does Ahimelech seem alarmed when David arrives?

The verse links Ahimelech’s trembling with David arriving alone, and Ahimelech’s question focuses on that detail.

1 Samuel 21:1

What two important things does David receive at Nob?

One is bread and the other is a weapon, and both are named clearly in the passage.

1 Samuel 21:6, 1 Samuel 21:9

What details in this story keep God in view, even while people are under pressure?

Look for the repeated words ‘before Yahweh’ and then compare them with the verses where Ahimelech trembles and David is afraid.

1 Samuel 21:1, 1 Samuel 21:6, 1 Samuel 21:7, 1 Samuel 21:12

David at Nob and Gath Sequence Cards

What you’ll need

  • Plain paper or scrap card
  • Pencils or markers
  • Scissors
  • Bible

Try it together

  1. Write or draw eight story moments from the passage on separate cards.
  2. Mix the cards up and have the children place them back in order using the Bible reading.
  3. Ask the children to label each card with either ‘choice’ or ‘outcome’.
  4. Invite each child or pair to retell the passage from the ordered cards.

This activity helps children sequence 1 Samuel 21:1–15 and notice the movement from request, to provision, to recognition, to fear, and changed behaviour.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, prepare the cards in advance with simple drawings and use only four major events: bread, sword, Gath, pretending to be insane.
  • For older or confident readers, ask them to match each card with the exact verse number and explain which details mention Yahweh and which describe fear or response.

An optional closing prayer

‘God, please help us listen carefully to your word. Help us notice what this story says about people under pressure and remember that your name is still before us in the passage. Amen.’

1 Samuel 21

1 Then David came to Nob to Ahimelech the priest. Ahimelech came to meet David trembling, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no man with you?”

2 David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has commanded me to do something, and has said to me, ‘Let no one know anything about the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you. I have sent the young men to a certain place.’

3 Now therefore what is under your hand? Please give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatever is available.”

4 The priest answered David, and said, “I have no common bread, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.”

5 David answered the priest, and said to him, “Truly, women have been kept from us as usual these three days. When I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was only a common journey. How much more then today shall their vessels be holy?”

6 So the priest gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the show bread that was taken from before Yahweh, to be replaced with hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

7 Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Yahweh; and his name was Doeg the Edomite, the best of the herdsmen who belonged to Saul.

8 David said to Ahimelech, “Isn’t there here under your hand spear or sword? For I haven’t brought my sword or my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.”

9 The priest said, “Behold, the sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the valley of Elah, is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you would like to take that, take it, for there is no other except that here.” David said, “There is none like that. Give it to me.”

10 David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

11 The servants of Achish said to him, “Isn’t this David the king of the land? Didn’t they sing to one another about him in dances, saying, ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?”

12 David laid up these words in his heart, and was very afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

13 He changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands, and scribbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down on his beard.

14 Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you see the man is insane. Why then have you brought him to me?

15 Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Should this fellow come into my house?”
