2 Samuel 7:18–29; 1 Chronicles 17:16–27

In this lesson, children hear David’s prayer after God’s promise and learn how its words move from wonder to praise to asking. They will notice repeated images such as David’s house, God’s name, God’s people, and blessing forever.

Before you teach

These verses show David the king sitting before Yahweh and praying. In both 2 Samuel and 1 Chronicles, he responds to what God has revealed and promised about his house. David speaks humbly, praises God’s greatness, remembers Israel as God’s people, and asks God to establish his word.

Learning aim

Students will be able to identify David as the speaker, name key images in the prayer such as house and name, and explain its movement from wonder to praise to asking God to confirm his word.

1

Welcome: Listen for the speaker and the first words

5 min

Ask children to listen for who is speaking and how he begins. Read the opening lines and point out that David the king went in, sat before Yahweh, and spoke to him. Explain that this is a prayer. David starts with humble wonder, asking, “Who am I?” and “what is my house?”

2 Samuel 7:18, 1 Chronicles 17:16

2

Read and explain: Wonder at God’s promise about a house

7 min

Read the next verses slowly and help children hear David’s amazement. He says God has spoken about his servant’s house for a great while to come. Explain that house is a repeated image in this prayer. David knows God has worked this greatness by his word and according to his own heart.

2 Samuel 7:19, 2 Samuel 7:20, 2 Samuel 7:21, 1 Chronicles 17:17, 1 Chronicles 17:18, 1 Chronicles 17:19

3

Discuss: Praise God’s greatness and remember God’s people

6 min

Show that the middle of the prayer turns to praise. David says there is no one like Yahweh and no God besides him. He also remembers Israel, whom God redeemed and made his people forever. Children can notice that David praises both who God is and what God has done for his people.

2 Samuel 7:22, 2 Samuel 7:23, 2 Samuel 7:24, 1 Chronicles 17:20, 1 Chronicles 17:21, 1 Chronicles 17:22

4

Make and respond: Build a Wonder, Praise, Ask card

8 min

Give each child folded paper with three panels labelled Wonder, Praise, and Ask. Ask them to choose short phrases from the prayer for each panel, such as “Who am I?”, “there is no one like you”, and “confirm it forever”. Point out repeated images including house, name, and blessing.

2 Samuel 7:18, 2 Samuel 7:22, 2 Samuel 7:25, 2 Samuel 7:26, 2 Samuel 7:29, 1 Chronicles 17:16, 1 Chronicles 17:20, 1 Chronicles 17:23, 1 Chronicles 17:24, 1 Chronicles 17:27

5

Closing: Review the movement of the prayer

4 min

Review the whole prayer together. Ask children to name the speaker, the three movements, and one repeated image. Remind them that David prays because God has revealed, spoken, and promised a good thing. Finish by repeating the main images: David’s house, God’s name, God’s people, and blessing forever.

2 Samuel 7:27, 2 Samuel 7:28, 2 Samuel 7:29, 1 Chronicles 17:25, 1 Chronicles 17:26, 1 Chronicles 17:27

Wonder, Praise, Ask Card

What you’ll need

  • paper or card
  • pencils
  • coloured pencils or crayons
  • Bible text

Try it together

  1. Fold one sheet into three panels.
  2. Label the panels: Wonder, Praise, Ask.
  3. Choose one short phrase from the Wonder verses and draw or copy it.
  4. Choose one short phrase from the Praise verses and draw or copy it.
  5. Choose one short phrase from the Ask verses and draw or copy it.

This card helps children trace the prayer’s movement in order and match each panel to exact phrases about wonder, praise, and asking from the passage.

Adapt for your group

  • For younger children, write the three headings and offer two short phrase choices for each panel so they can select and draw one.
  • For older children, ask them to compare matching verses in 2 Samuel and 1 Chronicles and list repeated image words such as house, name, people, and blessed.

An optional closing prayer

You may pray: “Lord God, you are great, and there is no one like you. Help us listen to your word and answer you with humble and thankful prayer. Amen.”

2 Samuel 7

18 Then David the king went in and sat before Yahweh; and he said, “Who am I, Lord Yahweh, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far?

19 This was yet a small thing in your eyes, Lord Yahweh, but you have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come; and this among men, Lord Yahweh!

20 What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Lord Yahweh.

21 For your word’s sake, and according to your own heart, you have worked all this greatness, to make your servant know it.

22 Therefore you are great, Yahweh God. For there is no one like you, neither is there any God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

23 What one nation on the earth is like your people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem to himself for a people, and to make himself a name, and to do great things for you, and awesome things for your land, before your people, whom you redeemed to yourself out of Egypt, from the nations and their gods?

24 You established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever; and you, Yahweh, became their God.

25 “Now, Yahweh God, the word that you have spoken concerning your servant, and concerning his house, confirm it forever, and do as you have spoken.

26 Let your name be magnified forever, saying, ‘Yahweh of Armies is God over Israel; and the house of your servant David will be established before you.’

27 For you, Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, have revealed to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found in his heart to pray this prayer to you.

28 “Now, O Lord Yahweh, you are God, and your words are truth, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.

29 Now therefore, let it please you to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you; for you, Lord Yahweh, have spoken it. Let the house of your servant be blessed forever with your blessing.”

1 Chronicles 17

16 Then David the king went in and sat before Yahweh; and he said, “Who am I, Yahweh God, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far?

17 This was a small thing in your eyes, O God, but you have spoken of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have respected me according to the standard of a man of high degree, Yahweh God.

18 What can David say yet more to you concerning the honor which is done to your servant? For you know your servant.

19 Yahweh, for your servant’s sake, and according to your own heart, you have done all this greatness, to make known all these great things.

20 Yahweh, there is no one like you, neither is there any God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

21 What one nation on the earth is like your people Israel, whom God went to redeem to himself for a people, to make you a name by great and awesome things, in driving out nations from before your people whom you redeemed out of Egypt?

22 For you made your people Israel your own people forever; and you, Yahweh, became their God.

23 Now, Yahweh, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant, and concerning his house, be established forever, and do as you have spoken.

24 Let your name be established and magnified forever, saying, ‘Yahweh of Armies is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel. The house of David your servant is established before you.’

25 For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build him a house. Therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you.

26 Now, Yahweh, you are God, and have promised this good thing to your servant.

27 Now it has pleased you to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you; for you, Yahweh, have blessed, and it is blessed forever.”
