David's Last Words
2 Samuel 23:1–7
In David’s last recorded words here, he speaks about God’s Spirit, a ruler who rules righteously and in the fear of God, God’s everlasting covenant with his house, and the picture of the ungodly as thorns.
Before you teach
This passage presents David’s last words as a formal saying. David is identified in several ways in verse 1, then he says Yahweh’s Spirit spoke by him. He reports what the God of Israel said about righteous rule, gives his own statement about God’s everlasting covenant with his house, and contrasts that with the ungodly.
Students will be able to explain that this passage describes a ruler who rules righteously and in the fear of God as like the light of the morning and tender grass, while David speaks confidently about God’s everlasting covenant and contrasts the ungodly with thorns.
Welcome: Listen for who speaks and what is described
5 minTell the children that this passage gives David’s last words here. Ask them to listen for who David says is speaking and what kind of ruler is described. Read the verses aloud slowly. Briefly point out David’s titles in verse 1 and his statement that Yahweh’s Spirit spoke by him.
2 Samuel 23:1, 2 Samuel 23:2
Read and explain: A ruler like morning light
7 minRead verses 3 and 4 again. Explain that David reports God’s words about a ruler who rules righteously and in the fear of God. The comparison is to the light of the morning when the sun rises, a morning without clouds, and tender grass after clear shining and rain. These are the passage’s own pictures.
2 Samuel 23:3, 2 Samuel 23:4
Discuss: David speaks of God’s everlasting covenant
6 minFocus on verse 5. David speaks about his house and says God has made with him an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure. Ask children to notice the words David uses: all my salvation and all my desire. Help them see that this is David’s confidence in what God has made.
2 Samuel 23:5
Make and respond: Reminder card from the passage
8 minChildren choose a short phrase from the passage such as ‘rules righteously’, ‘fear of God’, ‘morning without clouds’, or ‘everlasting covenant’. They write it on a small card and add a simple drawing from the passage, such as morning light, clear sky, rain, grass, or thorns. Then they share one realistic way to act rightly at home or school.
2 Samuel 23:3, 2 Samuel 23:4, 2 Samuel 23:5, 2 Samuel 23:6
Closing: Two pictures in David’s last words
4 minFinish by reading verses 6 and 7. Explain simply that the ungodly are compared to thorns that are thrust away and cannot be taken with the hand. Review the contrast in the passage: the ruler who rules righteously and in the fear of God is compared to morning light and tender grass, while the ungodly are like thorns.
2 Samuel 23:3, 2 Samuel 23:4, 2 Samuel 23:6, 2 Samuel 23:7
Questions to explore
What words show that David believed his message came from God?
Look for the lines where David says Yahweh’s Spirit spoke by him and where he says the God of Israel and the Rock of Israel spoke.
2 Samuel 23:2, 2 Samuel 23:3
According to this passage, what kind of ruler is compared to morning light and tender grass?
Find the description in verse 3 first, then connect it with the picture in verse 4.
2 Samuel 23:3, 2 Samuel 23:4
How does the passage contrast David’s words about God’s covenant with the picture of the ungodly?
Compare David’s words about the everlasting covenant in verse 5 with the thorn picture in verses 6 and 7.

Key Verse Reminder Card
What you’ll need
- plain paper or card
- pencils or pens
- crayons or coloured pencils
- scissors
Try it together
- Read verses 3 to 5 together and let each child choose a short phrase from one verse.
- Fold or cut paper into a small card shape.
- Write the chosen phrase neatly on the front of the card.
- Draw a simple picture from the passage, such as morning light, clear sky, rain, grass, or thorns.
- On the back, write one way to act rightly and with respect for God this week.
The card helps children remember the passage’s description of righteous rule and David’s confidence in God’s everlasting covenant in 2 Samuel 23:3, 2 Samuel 23:4, and 2 Samuel 23:5. Writing a response on the back is a separate way to practise what they learned.
Adapt for your group
- For younger children, offer two or three phrase choices from the passage and let them copy one with a matching drawing.
- For older or stronger readers, ask them to explain why verse 4’s picture fits the ruler described in verse 3 and how verse 5 adds David’s own words.
An optional closing prayer
You may pray: ‘God of Israel, please help us love what is right, respect you, and remember your true words. Help us act in ways that fit what we learned today. Amen.’

2 Samuel 23
1 Now these are the last words of David. David the son of Jesse says, the man who was raised on high says, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet psalmist of Israel:
2 “Yahweh’s Spirit spoke by me. His word was on my tongue.
3 The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me, ‘One who rules over men righteously, who rules in the fear of God,
4 shall be as the light of the morning when the sun rises, a morning without clouds, when the tender grass springs out of the earth, through clear shining after rain.’
5 Isn’t my house so with God? Yet he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure, for it is all my salvation and all my desire. Won’t he make it grow?
6 But all the ungodly will be as thorns to be thrust away, because they can’t be taken with the hand.
7 The man who touches them must be armed with iron and the staff of a spear. They will be utterly burned with fire in their place.”
